[WIP] Resources Icons - Critiques are welcome

on: August 05, 2016, 02:00:30 am
Hello everyone! I'm new here and I've been studying pixel art for a few weeks.

I'm thinking about begin a project of a survival game, and I'm starting by drawing the resources of the game.

Here is my first three resources:
dirt, stone, wood

(I'm not sure if its called "dirt" in english, because I'm not that fluent, but it's gonna be a resource to mix with water and make clay)

Do you guys have critiques to do that can help me improve these icons, or are them good?

I'm following some image as reference and the dirt has a lot of noise.
It was not the image I use but it's very similar:

I wasn't thinking to make something flat, but I'm gonna try to reduce the color count and noise, and see what I get. Thank you.

So here is what I got:

For me it's really better without that noise.. Any other advice?

P.S.: I made a little change on the old log wood, just smoothed a line.

Already a vast improvement in my opinion.
Here's my take on the dirt:

Oh.. I like this dirt =D

It's from far more realistic.

Now I'm gonna make water, and some tools like shovel and hoe.

Thank you very much.

IMO both woods are good in different ways. The noisier original version makes it look like dried-out/rotted driftwood, while the new one looks more like a cut wooden dowel! Keep both in mind depending on your needs, and try to strike for a middleground so you have a good "freshly cut" wood look. Wood's not uniform unless it's MADE to be!

I created tools now.

axe / hoe / shovel / a basket

What do you think?

P.S. I had another idea for a hoe right now, so rate all tools but the hoe.

The basket looks more like a wooden bucket than a basket, I'd add a metal ring to it. The hoe's handle looks a bit off center, same as the shovel. Bit further in for the hoe, and a bit to the right and down for the shovel. Try to match it with the indent!
Axe is perfectly fine to my eyes, at the 1:1 scale.

And here's a wood bucket that looks like what you've made, so you can see what I mean!
