I suspect you have a devkit for the PSP so you can provide pixelperfect screenshots for us.

I nominate Shadow of the Beast, for a wonderful mixture of early pre-technique Pixel Art, BAD art, AMAZING art and all what's in between.

I suggest Dodonpachi, which is very awesome on many levels when it comes to pixelart. Very, very good detailing.

Not the greatest game, but the art was really cool and there are a lot of clear screens and sprites available.

Hey.  No offense, but nearly everyone here has seen CT and ill assume have liked the graphics.  I brought it up as a suggestion and I think it was snake who said that CT is already all over the internet, and could be observed at several places.  What we are trying to do is to break down a game that has used techniques or made up techniques in order to make the game that little bit better.
Back from hiatus, just remembered how excellent this community is at forming technique in a fledgeling artist of any kind.

I would like to see Cruise for a Corpse http://hol.abime.net/3134/screenshot be critiqued. For those who haven't heard about it, it's an adventure game from the french guys that made Flashback and Another World. Shadow of the beast would be nice too.

EDIT: There are programs for the PSP that can take screenshots from any game. So it wouldn't be hard to get pixel-perfect screens from Valkyrie Profile.

Shadow of the Beast is equal parts sloppy brilliance and sloppy disappointment. I think it's great for critique because we won't get stuck at 'well... it's very good'. There's pillowshading, overdithering, monochromatic sprites, all sorts of hilarious wrongness by today's standards, but it was made in 1987!

sorry if i don't understand the concept of this post

This is a voting poll for a game made in pixels. The game that is selected in the end will be analysed on it's pixel art and how it relates and works in the game. Final Fantasy X-2 is not made in pixel so I'm afraid you can't place that vote.

I think it was snake who said that CT is already all over the internet, and could be observed at several places.

I don't recall saying that. From what I remember, it was mentioned that Crono Trigger was allready critiqued at an earlier point.

Dodonpachi, for the following reaons:

(btw hotlinking is bad)

Who among us would rather learn how they did Beast than learn to create awesomeness as shown above?

I loved Shadow of the Beast as a game, but even when I was 6 I knew the graphics were mostly ass.  I understand that the point of a commercial critique is to point out the good and the bad, but if we wanted to critique glaringly bad pixel art, we wouldn't need an activity-driven collaborative effort to find it.

Hrm. i'm torn between dodon and SotB. on the one hand i want to see dodon broken down to see how they achieved the look but i also fear the surface readings and not being able to get past the 'looks good' stage. SotB is easily taken apart and perhaps more relative to the restrictions on it's platform?

Shadow of the Beast because i'm thinking people are voting on dodon because they like the look. pfft. thats not what this is about.
EDIT: this echos mccow28 who posted while i was writing :D

personally...
id be up
'kirby and the amazing mirror'

i really enjoy the backgrounds - and the tile style i find intrigging at points awell
the sprites are full of character and emotion..

i know that perhaps we are looking at a game with poorer graphics to point out whats wrong - reason for shadow beast?? i believe
but honestly - whenever i analyze game art i always try to find the best examples - so that i can learn better techniques and do breakdowns to understand methods and reasoning behind things..
if it looks good, id rather try to find out why it does and how it was made to look good

some screens
http://kirby.classicgaming.gamespy.com/multimedia/pictures/mirror/

thats my pick...

Never got the whole 'Dodonpachi is great' thing.  Always found it to have incredibly mediocre gameplay and mostly bland (in my opinion) artwork.  Boring.

Shadow of the Beast on the other hand, despite not being that much fun to play and at times showing some badly dated pixelling has always captivated me with it's sort of dark fantasy otherworldly atmosphere (which is also greatly helped by the sound effects and music) and was a big influence on me at school.  I haven't had the same sorta feeling from any 3D title I've ever played.  An associate of mine showed a screenshot from his 'Beast Reborn' remake project a while back and he's a decent pixeller too.  Ain't heard from him in a while though and I can't find the pic on my PC.  Oh yeah and it's actually an influence on one of my current projects too (which I ain't shown anyone yet cept for some basic engine stuff... and won't show until I've got the atmosphere and graphic style the way I want it)

The animated intro to Shadow of the Beast 2 is still one of the creepiest things I've seen in a game.

if beast wins, could people please 'aquire' it for study purposes and just stroll around in the first forest? It's important to understand the art, to see how it functions in-game. A lot that seems 'broken' as far as pixel-art goes actually goes to very good use. There's wonderful parallax and music and stuff! The atmosphere can't be beat! Do yourselves a favour :)

Were you reminded of Lemmings because it features a level with Beast artwork/music?

There was a lot of that.  I seem to recall Walker appearing in one of the Lemmings games too (most likely Lemmings 2 The Tribes but I could be totally wrong about it all.. I know Menace was referenced for sure in one game).  And the Lemmings themselves appeared as much larger sprites in one of my all time favorite games Hired Guns as vicious scratchy gits that you could just mow down with a chain gun sorta thing or chuck grenades down into the Lemming pit.  Also remember that Hired Guns game allowed you to pixel your own characters and use them.  There would be me spending ages creating some cool mech type thing to go with CIM and CIM-Lite in the required four directions and sizes... and then my friend would just use a blank page therefore rendering him totally invisible to all... cheating bastard.  Especially since we used to use two screens (monitor in the usual socket, and the TV into the built in modulator of the A1200) and cover opposite halfs on each with cardboard.  I could never tell where he was until a saw a grenade appear in the air out of nowhere and bang I'm dead...

Hmm, sorry bout that... was getting swept down memory lane a bit.  Glorious Amiga days...

if beast wins, could people please 'aquire' it for study purposes and just stroll around in the first forest? It's important to understand the art, to see how it functions in-game. A lot that seems 'broken' as far as pixel-art goes actually goes to very good use. There's wonderful parallax and music and stuff! The atmosphere can't be beat! Do yourselves a favour :)

Yep , you have to see it to understand why it became so popular when it was released. The parallax is awesome (maybe not by todays standards though). For those who doesn't have an Amiga and are to lazy to use an emulator you can get some movies of it running here: http://recordedamigagames.ath.cx/modules/tinycontent/index.php?id=2

Chrono Trigger on SNES

I've got tons of screens too.

I gotta support this one. Some stuff done in terms of perspective play in that game chenged the way I percieve Overhead 2D games.

[Edit] Just noticed the screenshots have already been shown. But I still say it should get broken apart.

She's not guarding right now, she's just holding a thing to pass along to her husband warrior and then go do the dishes and change the diapers on the snake-babies.

My vote's for Chrono Trigger. ALthough took me the least amount of time to beat, was one of the most interesting games I've played. What was that robot's name? Xoon?

His name is Gato and he has metal joints. Beat him up and win 15 silver points. Or something. (Assuming that's the robot you're talking about.)

that was just the one at the fair, i think hes talking about Robo / R66-Y / R-66Y

My vote is for shadow of the beast

as far as CT, we all know it rocks, but its one of those games that is always mentioned, along with SD3.  nice game, but id like to look at something different

That Shadow of the Beast looks... Well, some of the screens look like crap, too little contrast for such interesting organic designs. I think I'll vote for Shadow of the Beast. I've never played Amiga games in my life and I've seen some great pixel graphics there. This game should prove interesting to take a look at for someone like me (and I guess I'm not the only one who grew playing NES and few old PC games, so Amiga is new uncharted territory).

DoDonPachi is awesome, I would have voted for that one but that Shadow... Well, it's screaming "re-make me!!"

See ya.

Just occured to me, if the Beast wins, I guess the remake challenge will be "take one of the enemies from the game [sheet will probably be given in advance] and remake me to the best of your ability!" There's tons of 1bit (seriously... dithered with the TRANSPARENT COLOR. HOLES IN THE ENEMIES. It's crazy) enemies in the countryside alone.

Ohh.. DoDonPachi... I think i could throw a few hints from what i've learned in their pixel techniques, nice style... its quite simple though.. sort of isometric-pixelling (high-lights shadows, etc..)

Yeah, in fact that is what he tells you in his singing performance <3 (kawai)

I know, I'm the über lurker but if you allow me to vote,  I say shadow of the beast. Dodonpachi would be nice as well (I've seen Keops play it ALOT [my little baby<3]).

Chrono Trigger  3
Shadow of the Beast 12
Dodonpachi  12
Secret of Evermore  1
Dune 2  1
Cruise for a Corpse 1
Kirby  1
Lemmings   1
Tyrian     1

Someone count again if you want, there's too many people changing their votes and stuff. I say we just do both at the same time.

we'll do both, as much is for sure. Indigo broke the tie for now. I'll set up the stuff we need and there'll be a new commercial critique within the week. Thank you for your patience.

Sorry, changes vote back to Chrono Trigger.

Hmmm... seems Dodonpachi is Republicans, Shadow of the Beast is Democrats, and Chrono Trigger is the Independents.

Go Perot.

Chrono Trigger  4
Shadow of the Beast 12
Dodonpachi  12

There's a count of all ones that got more than 1 vote. Now if the one's who didn't vote/added new ones change there vote to Chrono Trigger it could win.

Although EJ is F'in awesome.

I'm sorry, I guess I wasn't clear enough. The one we're going to go with is SotB now, then DDP, then we'll see. No need to post more votes and whatnot. I guess I should just lock this and hurry along with making the CC. So let it be done. It'll be up shortly.
