[C&C] Sword and shading practice

on: July 20, 2016, 02:24:30 am
I was practicing shading for another project and i got a bit carried away...

its still a WIP but im happy with how the metal looks so far :) and i would like to know if there is anything i can improve before working on the leather handle (if you have any tips, advice, or resources for shading/coloring leather i would greatly appreciate any help)

Excellent. On to critique, it seems kind of short. Not really a sword so much as a dagger I guess, the proportions feel really out of whack with the mini version. Lengthen the blade by about a third I think, should fix that.I'd also try to remove or soften the lines around the middle divot thingy and along the blade's outer edges, it's pretty noticeable with the edge lighting AND the outline.

looks like a shortsword. If you want to make it appear longer change the width of the (wooden?) handle and make the blade narrower too.

Also the crossbar seems like a really stupid design.
First of all it'd heavily restrict your movement for quick wrist movement.
Secondly it would let the opponents blade directly glide at your arm. If you would vertically mirror it it'd make by far more sense.

Well, I liked the charm of the original toonish non-practical sword, but if were going for realism you could definitely gain some detail by ditching the black outline.

also you might want to pick were your light is coming from. you have a different light source on each part of the sword.
