Help me to color my character

on: June 22, 2016, 04:07:03 pm
Hello there.

I am making my new game, but I always sucked with colors, I somehow always manage to create nice looking game, but the player always bland with background. I need your help how to color my character ?

Here's the image

There are a few ways you can go about doing that as I understand.
  • Check the values, the background should be darker.
  • Increase the contrast of the character's colors, make them a little richer
  • Add outlines to your character to separate it from the other tiles and background.
Correct me if I'm wrong

Just convert it to greyscale.  :y: What software do you use?

tsej's advice overall is sound, but I'd like to add that the background can also be lighter than the character, especially if it's a daytime exterior. The important thing is that the background has less contrast than the character, and that the average values of the two are different.

Here's a few quick attempts:

Might have butchered your character, and your color scheme if you used those colors elsewhere.

Here is one with just the character changed.  Problem is if you pump up his contrast and brightness any more you start getting a neon green feel which doesn't seem natural.

Here to learn pixel art.  Feedback always appreciated.

Ah, eishiya, thanks. That is indeed correct and an oversight on my part.
Experiment with a few things and post them here!
