The most recent one looks naked while the one before I thought was wearing armor

the one that looks naked is the sprite for the player when they aren't wearing any armor

Try this last one but bring in the chain mail design onto the legs like you had in the original, that way it shows a difference between the plate and the leg parts (can't think of the name).
