[CC] Dante from Devil May Cry

on: June 17, 2016, 09:42:49 pm
More practice. I didn't bother trying to do the face.

Based off this image:

Any tips for practicing and getting better?

In art there's a lot of different ways to approach the canvas.
The following isn't really what you are going for with this piece, but you asked for ways to practice.

Try drawing what something feels like, not what it looks like.

This sketch is not at all visually accurate to the reference.
However it is much more closely related to the feeling of the reference.
It's subtle, but Dante is giving off a cocky "What you gonna do bro?" type of vibe.

Your image reads more like this.

"All is well".
This is due to the lack of an emotion displaying face.
And that you have straightened the lean of the body and tilt of the head.

Also note that we can change the feeling the character is giving off just by changing the face and leaving the rest the same.

As you make art decide how you want to balance drawing from feelings and drawing from vision.

2nd attempt. I tilted the arms and head to get more of the "feel" the original picture was about, like you suggested. I couldn't draw a face without it looking like a emoji though. Maybe it's too low-res?

Resolution is def part of the challenge.
I cheated a bit drawing large, but it made it easier to show the theory in isolation from pixel art.

Unless you really want 1:1 image, which is totally valid,  don't be afraid to slightly tweak the proportions.
If it starts to seem out of whack just fatten up his other parts as well.
For instance after thickening his head, I might consider making the hands slightly larger.
Also the gloves should fit closer to the wrist.

Here's a rough edit.
It's not quite right but something like this.

wonderful tips PPD  :)

i think he hit the nail on the head, try drawing with feeling instead of just with as things look.  you may also want to loosen up your sketches.  notice how rough ppd's sketches are.  they allow him to be free and unrestrained to create the intended emotions and organic feel...refinement is for later.  youre trying to be clean before you have the emotion; expression
