Tiny Coffee Cup

on: June 17, 2016, 03:45:50 pm
Thought this might be a simple and quick one for anyone to make an edit to.

I have several characters (for a game) and was making a coffee cup that would be both sitting on a counter/desk/etc and also used in animations. Matching the pixel resolutions makes the cup so few pixels making it harder to clearly convey it (of course a person holding it and drinking from it will get the point across, but still). I think I could still use a lot of practice at conveying objects/features using limited pixels so am looking forward to learning from any responses.

Here's a few things I drew up:

(Limited to MS Paint atm so sorry for background)

Color is also tricky as character has a lot of blacks/grays/whites as well as brown. Would prefer the classic white mug but may choose colored to differentiate.

Appreciate any edits or attempts, just please don't change the pixel resolution as that would make your post unhelpful to this circumstance.

Thanks

Hey, I am liking the third one the best with the 4th close to it. Both are fitting the style you seem to be going for.

My mane reason to post though was to get you out of MS Paint, I encourage you to try out paint.net, a great free program for pixel art that I have been using for a few years now. It also can be used for non-pixel art pieces, has a lot of effects and stuff.

Haha, I usually don't use Paint. TGIF but needed a quick mental escape at work (really doubt my boss is into pixel art and would ever see this) so pulled up paint for some quick edits. I use GIMP at home. Am happy with GIMP but wouldn't be opposed to trying other programs out.

Thanks for the comment though!

Cup seems to get wider on frames 2 , 3, 4.

Isn't super noticeable at first but after watching it a few times it pops out at me. Then again I was also eyeing the cup since that is what the post is about.

I really like the character though.

Wow, when I read that I thought no way. But sure enough it does. I was really out of it when I did that - shouldn't have forced myself to finish.

I'm also thinking the outline of his head needs to shift some, especially his ears, but trying to think which way.

Maybe bringing the top of the head down a bit when he leans to sip. You might also want a slightly different color of outline for the cup so it doesn't blend with the outline of the head. Or at least see how it looks. Idk :P

Did I make the coffee and donut too big?

Or maybe it is accurately portraying today's portion sizes in the US.

I think the donut looks good larger like that. It is really letting the viewer know, THIS GUY HAS A FREAKIN' DONUT.

Thanks.

And I realized that even though the donut is half of his body width, or the size of one of his legs, it is cartoon proportions where his head is huge.  So compared to the size of his head I don't think it's that bad.
