[C+C] Arid Plateu

on: May 10, 2016, 11:31:36 pm
Working on a quick piece to practice my colors and some shading stuff, anyone got some feedback for me? supposed to be kind of a late-afternoon scene.

I think the sun should have a brighter yellow orange center and maybe a fuzzy, smooth, hazy aliased edge. You should try and emulate some sort of god rays effect coming from the sun. The gray around the sun looks weird I think. I like the color palette and shading of the rocks so far. The atmospheric perspective of the background rocks look good.

If you are to add the above, it's worth mentioning that you may also need to add a brighter tone to the sun hitting the foreground assets, such as the rocks and etc.

Yeah that's what I was trying for with the grey edges, thought they were just a paler orange but I'm colorblind and its hard to tell.

Not sure on that, I was going for kind of a "washed out" dry sorta look with it and I worry that might conflict with that

HOKAY, popped in the sun-tweaks.
Still not sold on making the sun brighter, but I did that too.

I made an edit highlighting the foreground:

I would say I like the brighter sun as it looks more like a sun. The path between the cliffs was more green than red as far as RGB is concerned and against the orange background seemed to be pretty obviously green to me.

I dropped the red just a smidgen in the purple bit so now it's a dull dark blue. I also increased the lightness of the midtones on the cliff so that they are more visible, felt like it was lacking contrast. I would say you could probably still add some more contrast to the foreground and maybe even some brighter highlights on the cliffs as the image as a whole might be a bit out of balance with lights and darks.

Sorry, I have trouble seeing red and green so thanks for the assist there. And yeah that deffo looks more SUNlike but I don't know if it still fits the feeling I was going for.
Makes the brightness look more harsh and unforgiving than originally intended.

Can you reword that last part though? I don't think I'm quite comprehending.

Well with the sun being so bright you would probably expect some pretty bright highlights on the edge of the cliff face. What I mean about balance is something like this: http://art.nmu.edu/groups/cognates/wiki/3ca70/Balance.html

Basically you have big interesting sun and clouds to look at that are off center in the overall image and it creates a focal point that is non-central making the image feel out of balance. There is nothing interesting in the bottom right of the image to draw your eyes away from the sun.

For example, not suggesting you do this but if there was a creature hanging from that wall looking out into the sunset then your eyes would be pulled back and forth between the dark creature on the cliff and the bright sun in the distance. I'm suggesting adding just some more complexity to the cliff face, maybe some brighter highlights or more interesting terrain that might draw your eyes back into the foreground.

That's actually a super excellent idea, and something I might add to it. The focal point of the piece was actually INTENDED to be the sun, but this visual balance thing you've brought up seems like a fun thing to experiment with.
