The Official Pixelopolis Off-Topic Thread

on: September 05, 2005, 09:45:47 am
Another week of fun and excitement.

     • Have you given a serious critique this week?

     • Good luck to our new Representatives! I look forward to many a fun activity!

     • OT Challenge: Props to whomever can tell a good pixel art related joke! Is it possible?

     • What's your favorite video game soundtrack, or song??

You're welcome to talk about anything, as this is the off-topic thread. Keep it clean! :P

Anyone know of any good free games out there? I sort of just finished playing through Cave Story(http://agtp.romhack.net/doukutsu.html) another two times, and I'm wondering if anyone here has found some free games in recent years thay they have thoroughly enjoyed playing.

As for Cave Story, I totally recommend it to anyone who hasn't played it. It's a side-scroller with a limited exploring aspect, and a very fun weapon system.. There's plenty of bosses and secrets, too. It's also really amazing just how well polished it is, it's quality is right up there with old SNES-GEN games, despite being done by a single person.

That's simply not true... I have no idea where you get your information, but wallabies have the same set of gonads as every other mammal (excepting perhaps yourself ;)). They also have pouches though, and that makes them cool.

I'm looking for a program that i need to live.

I need to be able to specify tile-size, and have tilesets imported as pngs (i'd line up tiles in the pg and then it would seperate them by 1 pixel in the program and use dividing lines)
i need to be able to place the tiles into a field, and be able to select an area of a few tiles, and a few tiles from the tileset and have the program place those tiles randomly into it, or place say 6 of "flower" 3 of "grass" 2 of "rock" within that area.

<_<

does such a program exist? it'd be for mockups only really.

zolthorg: www.tilemap.co.uk   - mappy win32.  Pretty good map editor, geared towards gameboy and mobile development.  Has a fairly obscure plugin to create 'randomly' distributed tiles.  It actually works from a 8-bit targa bitmap from memory, using the palette indexes to place tiles.  This means you can use noise functions or whatever to create your layout file.  Hope it is useful (I didn't make it by the way).

I was sort of hoping to get something more than a link to some roms. I wanted to see if anyone else had come across a hobby game they felt had the same level of polish as Cave Story

I can't provide links at the moment, but I know that Kenta Cho (ABA games) makes some really nice shooters.  rRootage and Noiz2sa are classics.  There's also Torus Trooper, and my personal favorite, Tumiki Fighters (defeated enemies stick to your ship, adding their firepower to yours.  It's really neat.).

if you google "doujin shooter" chances are you'll find plenty of freeware shooters in a similar vein.

Pixel has also made a couple of other pixelly games, if you want to search out his website.

If you have a mac, lurking around idevgames can wield any number of free/ in progress games.  Macupdate.com usually has most of the mac games out there, freeware or shareware, too.

Abuse has been released for free.  Check out Liberated Games for other commercial games that shared the same fate (like the first two GTA games and Bungie's venerable Marathon series).

Spend a couple of hours roaming through sourceforge or games made using sdl(most of them are freeware).

N, the ninja game, is freeware and is one of the best lode-runner type games out there.  There's also Enigma, which is based on the old oxyd games by dongleware (search for enigma and oxyd on google and you should find it).

Does that help?

Big, big reccomendation on N by me as well. I've been playing it since the first release, and I just can't stop. there should be more games like that. Warning Forever is the best rRootage type game in my opinion. Also play nikujin, as it is devilishly difficult but awesome as a ninja game can be. Sawtooth is well informed.

go to www.gamehippo.com and try generally and highway pursuit (or something similar).

i have a lot of pixelart being done but it is for games unfortunately, NDA doesn't allow me to post them here.
in the meantime I have posted a few smaller pieces in main section and have the ocean pic in progress at the moment.  I want to do a logo next, so we'll see how long it takes me to finish the current pic - clouds are not my strong point so at least i'm learning.

<3 N. It's so fun once you start getting good at it. It's one of those games where you end up wanting to tell someone the whole scenario about how you moved to shake off the missiles and dodge the lasers at the same time. Like one of those obsessed CS or Halo kids, if you know any of them in real life. "So I had the needler and he had the fuel rod..." sort of thing.

I just remember playing Halo PC online and it's the first thing that came to mind behind CS. Speaking of Halo PC, I once shot a banshee three times with a rocket launcher before it hit the ground in Blood Gulch. Second shot killed the guy, but I went for the reload and third shot out of curiosity. Crowning moment. And the time I killed a banshee with a fragmentation grenade. And the time I threw a frag grenade on my side of the hill, timing it with the sound of a warthog in the distance. That was cool too. Watching the warthog fly over the hill and suddenly being shot up by a grenade. Good times I had, back when I had DSL...

I hate dial up.

Im gona be working on a CG piece, and im now wondering.
Is it appropriate to post it here... somewhere??? put NPA (non-pixelart) in the title or something?
or should i stick to some other forums to post.

Just wondering. Either way is fine, because this IS a pixelart forum. But thats why i thought id double check first

You don't know what you're the man now dog is?  It's truly an internet classic by now.

here's my favorite: the emo song

also, alex:  the game was Umihara Kawase.  Home of the Underdogs has it.  The PS version is the best, but the snes version is still pretty damn good.

Maybe you're loaded down with crappy extensions.

Preposterous! I only have image zoomer!

EDIT: And do any of you find the iPod nano to be a really dumb idea? It looks entirely too small. It's only the thickness of a number 2 pencil, and I feel like it'd break just as easily.

I'm gettin' the Creative Zen Touch 20 GB. Looks like a great choice.

My good bud Les Claypool did the theme song to Robot Chicken.

And when I say good bud, I mean he's awesome, and he has no idea who I am.

Um, there's the whole babies in bondage thing that was just posted.

You might want to do something about that.

Also, showing a forum to your class is like saying to them, "I'm afraid of real social contact so I talk to strangers on the internet."

You'd be better off showing them ptoing and noko's collaboration thread, or something like that.

But I had to zoom in and use a mouse. He had a tablet. Haha, I have the progress animation if you're interested too...

When I was younger, we had to draw with mice. Real mice. You'd have to squish their heads until they imploded and the blood was your ink. People soon moved onto larger animals, since the mice population was going down with it having to take at least three hundred of them for an intricate 9" x 12" piece. We don't talk about what came of the Dodo bird after that though.

You used mice? Hah!

We had to crush rocks until they turned to molten lava.

Me and Oog used to collaborate until he burned his hands off...

I'll see if I can take a picture of some of our work.

I come bearing a random funny picture.  Just so you all know, my aunt actually took this picture; it is not doctored in any way.  So without further ado, here it is:

Some of you may not find it funny, some of you may.  Either way, I'll still think it's funny.

I kind of like making little mistakes and then trying to make them into something else.

I end up filling up a whole page with random doodles and forget what I was going to draw...

Oh yeah, random mockup:

I was just screwing around with 2x2 pixel res and small tiles (they were 16x12 before I double-sized them.)

It will probably turn in to a puzzle-platformer. That's if I can work out this stupid tile engine...

But I'm having troubles with the "marble" tiles (The brownish floor ones). Any ideas on how to fix/replace them?

ok, looked around a bit more

http://www.kleinbottle.com/whats_a_klein_bottle.htm

Quote
Take a rectangle and join one pair of opposite sides -- you'll now have a cylinder. Now join the other pair of sides with a half-twist. That last step isn't possible in our universe, sad to say. A true Klein Bottle requires 4-dimensions because the surface has to pass through itself without a hole.

I understand how it's built now(it's easy if you grab a strip of paper and do step 1, unfold and do step 2, what's imposible is to do step2 after step1), but I still cant quite picture it.

I wonder if there's any software with which you can atleast look at it from every angle...I saw something like that for the 4d equivalent of the cube once, it was a stereogram (so that it could be truly 3d) and it was really trippy to watch the way it folded and unfolded on itself before your eyes.

Haha, it's like an optical illusion.

Math is so fun when it doesn't suck like geometry. I like trig and weird 4D stuff like this. I wish I could take a class on it...

But I'm having troubles with the "marble" tiles (The brownish floor ones). Any ideas on how to fix/replace them?
You could try looking at some Castlvania screenshots and see how they do it.

He could had two perfect hands…
And ten perfect toes…
Two perfect ears
And a cute button nose...
The head in the shape of the most perfect balloon!!
But what if he’s gay?!
What did you say?!
But what if he’s gay in the womb!

http://4d.shadowpuppet.net/4d.php

That should explain them fairly well.

I can't seem to grasp the concept of a fourth dimension though.

I hate it when people get all uppity and say "The 4th dimension is time, man. I know, I'm some sort of scientist"

EDIT:

Updated mockup. Only uses a few colors, and I like it. The problem was the marble texture, and I may experiment with it some more, but for the time being, I'll use brick.

Heh, time a dimension... Yeah, that's why I refer to hypercubes and such as the "fourth geographical dimension". That site I linked to makes a good point, though. That thing about only being able to really experience a certain amount of dimensions if you, yourself reside in one dimension under. In other words, the only way to depict 3D without it being 3D is with a 2D medium. So to depict 4D you have to do it in 3D. That's where the stereograph thing comes in... and that makes it even worse...

Nice mock-up. It looks so terribly, horribly old-school. That's a good thing.

He also put 12 years old, California. Winking smiley. Stereotypical, anyone?
Everyone knows there ARE no stereotypes in pixel art forums! We're all screwed up in our own unique way!

Speaking of screwed stuff, does anyone know of any decent money-free, ad-free website host with a decent amount of webspace? I want a place to host a typical homepage (with stuff about me, things made by me, and links revolving around me), as well as a site dedicated to my "music" (which is why I want something with a bit of space.)

If not, I'll just hack my way into one of you guys' sites...

I hear Kon's got a pretty nice and airy place...
