It's not much of a difference, but mine's edited, I fixed a couple of things, especially AAing.

It's really amazing how everyone stepped up to the plate and created very similar yet unique avatars.

I've updated mine just recently. Now with added animation and classic GameBoy colours.
These are all awesome and it's great to see such quick reaction with all the members here to participate.

Animation coming soon.
Back from hiatus, just remembered how excellent this community is at forming technique in a fledgeling artist of any kind.

My portrait is (i think) very similar to my actual face.  My real nose is a bit smaller, and my cheeks are probably a bit fuller.

My face is longer than in my self portrati, but I was working from memory.  And I'm much handsomer, of course; not even the best artist could capture my beauty.

There's much insane awesome here, that I am tempted to remake mine to fit the criteria better instead of the circleloop it does now, and the likeness isn't very close either, but hey, it's ok to not be the same as everybody else :P

TBH all of the other avatars actually show us... Giving a face to pixels we create  :P... and yours (while being pretty good) just seems like an ordinary pixel-art piece, whereas ours serve a 'purpose' if you will.

I think it would look cool if you made a normal version of YOU and animated it so you morphed into this creature.

P.s : Shouldn't this be under challenges/activities?

The low-color palette is by Brian the Great, used with permission. It just might just be the most accurate pixel representation of myself. :o

Hmm, now that I look at it in 2x, the face looks too wide. Maybe I'll edit it later.

Edit: small changes made to lines from nose/mouth.

used this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_palettes#Apple_IIe

@S51:  As has been said, the point of the fad was a self-portrait, more accurately, one pixeled at 64x64 and increased to double its size.  Atm yours stands out from the bunch quite a bit.

Cool.  But if everyone starts to love it, and we run out of kittens, what happens?

OK OK.  Generally speaking a lot of people on other forums have signed up just to show off the Fadatars(patent pending).  So we should have things like this more often to attract members who are actually here to pixel, and not just trying to hire us.

I really need to work on the animation and there are a number of other problems in the piece but I doubt I will be changing it much. Why try and make it as perfect as me. Even if it's not ripped and just remade from reference, you should always supply the reference you're using. And also, this is extremely fast and dirty work, you should really clean it up, aa it and whatnot. Now it's just not very aesthetically pleasing at all.

I made one, it's quite terrible though. Doing portraits are really not my strong point. Some later day when I'm good enough, I'll re-do this.. but for now, this is as good as I can do. :P

Dogmeat, this looks like it was badly color-reduced.

I didn't color reduce, I traced the outline of picards head from a pic and used the pallete everyone else was using to shade it. I was really tired last night and forgot to mention it was a draft, I suppose saying "all i'm going to do for tonight" wasn't enough to get that point across. I plan to work on it more tonight and smooth him out, and I'm really considering adding a few colors. Bear with me, it's been a LONG time since I've pixeled and I'm like the tin-man when dorothy first encountered him.

Touched it a little during a meeting, still working on it.

Think the left eye needs more detail, want to smooth out a lot of the individual pixels, etc..

Helm, good to see you're still around :)

I really like the c64 palette. I barely gave any thought to my choices and the colours still came out good.

GOODNIGHT, you better join in on this. I'm drooling over my keyboard at the thought of a portrait in your style.

The exercise

Reply #136 on: October 03, 2006, 12:08:14 am
Please accept my apologies.

This isn't an excuse, but an admission--the creation of this avatar was a first for me in two ways. It was my first attempt at doing computer graphics (I've been a long time oggler but have never tried it) and my first attempt at animation.

It took a very long time--in the process I learned how to use photoshop and image ready in a day using Adobe Help. I'm sure the more experienced among you could have knocked this out in a few hours. It took me much longer.

But it seems I didn't follow the guide--when I looked at the gifs I only noted that they were 128x128 and used an orange shaded background. I didn't realize that you were supposed to create it in 64x64.

They say first impressions last the longest, so I hope I haven't started off on the wrong foot with everyone.

Therefore, please accept my sincere apology.

HAHA, GA. no problems at all.

This was not an exercise to begin with, and there are no strict rules either. It's just that I did my avatar and people seemed to like it and made similar versions.
I like yours, reminds me of old dos games. Good stuff :)

There are no ugly colours, only ugly combinations of colours.

I see a great many designs here from obvious talents. I wonder what would result from a little collaboration?

Yes I was reffering to you. I was very impressed by how when color came on in the avatar animation, you handled the eye coloring and to degrees the lips and subtle chin variations of lightness, without wasting shades. Though the piece retains a somewhat rugged edge, not completely pixel-art-smooth which is very very rare that I find charming instead of thinking 'FIX FIX COMPLETE MAKE IT RIGHT'. So um, I guess I really like your avatar.

So um, I guess I really like your avatar.

Kind words sir. I like yours as well. Your odd choice of colors and the economical way in which you've put them to use is artful and eye-catching. Using the animation to shift your dithering around on the backdrop is neat. Excellent attention to shadows. Again, your color economy is quite good. Hope to see more of your work as I delve into old posts. Any good ones come to mind that you can link me to?

what I was impresed about was besides everything, the metal gear Cameo, you really moved me with it <3

I moved you? You have moved me, my dear, with your kind praise. Thanks for noticing my MGS cameo. The layout isn't exact because of the space limitations, but I feel I've captured the essence of the "codec" screen.

As for you, I find your avatar to be--sumptious. Perhaps even delicious. Why? You've employed a naturalistic style to what is normally symmetrical. Most of the avatars have complete symmetry (except for hair) between the left and right eh sections of the face. But I see a slight turning of the head in your piece, and small differences in size and shape. It strikes me as something you labored over as a true artist would - capturing the essence of life without trying to straighten nature into manmade preconceptions. Does that make any sense?

I'd love to see more of your work as well. Any links to posts or galleries? I have nothing up as this was the third piece of CG I've ever done. Heh.

....

Let's see. To Elk! Elk, my friend, I saw in one of your posts that you don't think you can make your portrait or some such nonsense. Will you at least try? You can obviously make a face. Now just make yours. Get a mirror and stare at yourself for a while. Then slowly build up the pixels in your graphics program. Do your best, take your time, and share it with us. I'm sure some of these fine people can give you tips or give you a nudge in the right direction if you're having trouble. Just remember, once begun is half done!

Updated my avatar.

I added a likeness using the magical 16 color palette that all of those old DOS games used. Also reduced the colors on the main portrait from 184 to 16! This animation is still weighing in at 226k, even after color reduction and using transparencies anywhere I can. I'm learning this process so any suggestions on how to squeeze out some more bytes would be helpful.

Hey GA, I like that new one. very cool use of the EGA palette. I had a look at your animation and you could shave of quite some kb by removing all that dither you got going on during the fades. just make proper inbetween colours for the fades and not let photoshop or whatever you use dither it up :) Dither compresses way worse than solid colour, esp random dither.

Keep it up. :y:

Re: The gathering of the Fad Avatars

Reply #153 on: October 06, 2006, 06:52:17 am
Hello,
I am new here. For now I only looked at a few threads, but I think they give me inspiration.
Pixel art is something new for me, but I think it's fun doing it.
I am currently working on a lineart.
I will post it, if I feel it's good.

Now to my questions.
What is a fad avatar?
What does fad stand for?
Is it an abbreviation or an acronym?
When does someone deserve to be in this fad gang? :)

Thanks for reading :)

It means 1 guy did 1 thing.....

And all these other guys took his "concept" and used their creative talents to assimilate that concept to produce something unique but staying within the boundries of what makes up the concept.

First of all "fad" is more or less the same as craze, something that is hot right now. Just try to picture fashion, when people start wearing similar clothes because they become popular. (btw the dictionary is your friend)
Now putting it in the fad avatar context, all the similar avatars here on this thread would be fad avatars.
And it's not like you have to meet any requirements for joining it, just pixel your own avatar :0

Updated yet again, did an animation of my final:

For the older images:

OLD:   NEW: FINAL:

Made a bunch more modifications, so it looked more like me. The pic i took of my head was at a weird angle, so I had to use that and also a mirror as reference, but I think I have it pretty damn close. Let me know if you guys want to see the ref.

THanks GA,

unfortunately, I actually look like that. Except the open mouth part. Funny, the extra frames for the animation took me no more than 30 mins.

I took the advice of someone on this thread and did myself, I still plan to do picard and data though, i just needed something to rebuild my skills with first. Or do you mean a previous version of the one I have now?

The overdithered style isn't very flattering blown up Dogmeat- notice most entries use a lot more simple, cell like shading that maintains its appeal at 2x.

Sixteen colours of dottyness. It looks a bit dirty, if someone sees something I sould change for the better, please tell me :]

Animation coming if I ever come up with something amusing.

EDIT: I just realized that I still have stuff to do but, alas, it is in the middle of the night and I'll just change the picture if I update it. Critz R ztilL WELCUM as I'd deliberately put it. :D

jad: i think, while they work great for the hair. the two darkest browns does not really fit as skin tones. it kindof makes the neck look like some sort of jaw strap for a helmet.
or maybe it would be enough to just add more lighter skintones to the neck. and also the nostril area.

SEE UPDATED IMAGES BELOW
First one has hires restrictions, I think. Second is hires edited (doesn't use any restriction aside from the palette). Third is an attempt to fully use the potential of the c64 palette.

And I've just realised that there are a few problems on the colours, but I'll fix them later.

And I want C&C, please. ;)

Filax, man. The C64 pal looks awesome. Completely slapped me in the face and reminded me that when editing palettes you're allowed to edit the actual pixels too. No C&C from me i'm afraid, just caught my eye and i had to comment.  :y:

The fad is having an avatar that's a portrait of yourself.  Most people also copied the horizontal bands and the palette, some people animated theirs with other graphical restrictions, but the fad is just the portrait avatar.

ok what the hell, I did one.  It ain't animated or anything.  I mainly did it for some more Amstrad CPC practice as am working on games for the old machine and need to practice the wide pixel mode some more as am to used to using its 4 color 320x200 resolution.  This portraits based on an old pic of me cos I currently have really short hair that's so freakin' boring to draw.

Hm, never did many portraits, so it looked as good practice, besides the whole fun of it.Problem is, it looks like me...30 years in the future  :P About the "animation" (cough, only two frames, cough), I had Monty Python's The Mouse Problem in mind, but now, looking at it, it kinda reminds me of Tom and Jerry.

Edit: Oopsie-daisy, it has a problem that is quite obvious but I couldn't notice until Sohasu pointed in PJ...small head =X Going to work on that.

.TakaM: What's the point of just quoting his post?  We (and he) can see that the wrong image appears to be present.

@rabidbaboy: What .TakaM didn't say is that your hotlinking is apparently not appreciated ;)

aaed with the colors you already had there, fixed some small banding problems on the neck, changed second brightest shade of flesh a bit. Hope I helped.

in your edit the highlight on the right eye makes the pupil and cornea look a bit smaller, kinda un balanced compared to the left eye.

Whats got me confused; is this a male or female face?! It's anime metrosexual!  :hehe:

Metrosexual?  Androgynous would be a better descriptive word, since metrosexual is a reference to lifestyle and not appearance...

there's no way to change another person. it's up to them to change themself.
best bet is to learn to accept others for whom they are, and this goes to both of you, helm and dogmeat..

Helm just made an edit trying to help, not saying "THIS IS HOW IT'S DONE". In this case here Helm has done nothing wrong or bad whatsoever. Dogmeat is the one who should apologise.

every perspective is equally valuable..
I wasn't refering to the edit helm made.
it could be seen that helm's response to dogmeat's simple question was provocative towards dogmeat, causeing dogmeat to respond in an equally provocative nature..
we shouldn't dismiss one for the other based upon which one is more or less provacative.

I simply suggested what i did, and hope things move on.

I've always respected you Alex, for the sheer fact that regardless of what's going on, on this forum, you seem to always be the "mature" one in comparison to most people on this forum. I think that's what's been bothering me since I've come back, most of you are way too serious, and immature. No-one gives good critique anymore and it seems like everyone is being real fake.

I aplologize, for swimming in the immaturity pool with some of you.

I suppose I just want pixelation to be what it used to be, but I've realized it never will be.

I'm outta here, gonna stop trying to make something out of nothing.

The new forum is good, has some neat people, but I just can't take this monopoly of mods that seem to dominate the forum.

It's my own problem, peace out.

un-dithered is much better, you should only really dither when trying to give the impression of a rough texture, especially when your final image is doubled.
just add an extra colour if you want it to look smoother :y:

I'd say this is bullshit. You can perfectly use dithering for blending colors, giving volume, smoothing and so on, and not for just giving "the impression of rough textures". It pretty much involves mixing dithering patterns (not only sticking to one, though you can if desired), knowing light sources and the goal of dithering itself within the picture, and of course knowing how to do it :X

I'll admit I did skip other purposes dithering is useful for, but I did that just so my post would seem on point because I believe all the dithering has done is make lego's face look rough

Re: The gathering of the Fad Avatars

Quick attempt. Not exactly photo-realistic. It's 1 color, animated between three frames to simulate 3 shades.

EDIT:

I made it transparent (making it a little softer on the eyes) and added a background to better match the others. I'm tempted to go nuts on this, because I know smarter dithering all over and a frames (as opposed to 3) could probably create a much smoother image, but...eh. If anyone else wants to experiment with the idea, feel free. I used Photoshop and Ulead Gif Animator and outputted a 50fps animation with transparency.

EDIT2:

Did the BG mathematically and was able to get 9 different 'shades'. This was just using 3 ditherings (dots, dithered, solid missing dots). I've seen guys like Ptoing with a helluva lot more ditherings than 3 in a piece. It'd be cool to see a larger piece flickered at 1x size and really maxed out - see just how much depth and detail can be gotten from 1 color and some animation.

Oh my. Epilepsy warning! Interesting effect though, reminds me of flicker modes on the c64 (IFLI and the like. take two FLI widepixel pics, hardware hack one of the two one half-pixel to the right, flicker between the two as fast as the poor c64 can handle, get more colors and simulated single-pixels almost)

I will try some things with this in black and white to see what can be done. Inspiring.

I remember when you tried something like that before, Adam.  This seems to have worked out better, if I recall correctly.  Is there anything different you did this time?

Not that I know of (don't really remember earlier tests). I did a GBA demo with a programmer friend several years back and that was amazing. Since the GBA runs at a steady 60fps (unlike glitchy web gifs) it didn't appear to flicker at all - it just looked like a flat grey. Coincidentally, my lead programmer on the Flash GBA game used this technique all over the place - flash's blur, and all shadows in the game are pure black or red, flickered on and off at 60fps. That's why in the game it's this nice, smooth opacity but it looks like crap in screenshots online because they either capture pure black/red or none. :P

.. I think that's a bit of a extreme exaggeration of my features. My cheeks don't actually perk out THAT much, I just happen to be smiling in that particular picture. Here's a picture with just a flat expression, which is what I tried to do more or less in the av.

.. see not so much of a perk out there. XD ... and you sort of made me look 40 years old. XD

It's grammatically correct even, though a slightly weird way to put it. I'd personally say something along the lines of:

Looks great! I would use the alternative shade instead of dithering though. It gives your face a grainyniess when you use dithering.

I personally don't know if making it double the size would be good for me because it's already pretty big in file size as it is.
Is there a way to make the file size smaller? This has always been an issue for me when I would make large pixel animations.

Thanks. As I was early in the fad my avatar has been outclassed by almost all others and I've considered updating it, but in the end I never do.

About animation size, I don't think anyone's gonna cry about ~181 klb.

Well, as said, this is just lovely :)
Perhaps the last frame could have less square irises... but still eyes are a gem to look at!
The only thing I really have a issue with is the background... maybe too many hues... is it still temporary perhaps? I noticed you did not do any AA against it...
Anyway, hard to notice given the cuteness of the rest ;)

I thought I should have a proper FAD avatar as well... what a pity I'm no pixeller!
My only hope to manage to create something vaguely resembling myself was taking a real picture and editing it. So, I took one of the few I had at hand, chose a limited number of colors, scaled down (both size and colors) my face (the one at the top) and then started pixelling... it took a lot of time (of course, I'm slow ;)), and eventually managed to get something acceptable (face at the bottom).

However, it looked way to realistic, whereas I wanted something cartoonish like most of your avatars... so, I spent again a lot of time trying lots of different palettes and pixel arrangements, but I'm afraid I failed miserably :(

Anyways, it's late now and I've already wasted too a long time... so, I guess I'm gonna have to be happy with this :-\

Why, thank you! ^_^

Yeah, I know what you mean about the irises. I'll try to fix that.
And yeah, I personally think the background is too bland, so I plan on changing it soon.

Anyway, you did a great job with your avatar. No sense beating yourself up over little things. It looks really good to me.
Y'know, for someone who claims to be no pixeller, you sure are good!

Oh, and your avatars kick ass, Baccaman! I totally love the expressions and toning.

This one in particular is awesome.
It almost has a "TwoFace" look to it.

Looking forward to see the revised version...

Oh... well... probably it did not turn out to be a complete disaster only because I feel comfortable with tiny stuff...
But, hey, thanks for the encouragement! You just convinced me to try to improve it* and remove the line below it.

*edited now... it looks a bit more like me... but there is still job to do :-\

Not that I know of. Just make a self-portrait, and make sure it's 64x64x2 (128x128 with double the pixel size).

A new fadatar right here :0

And no, my hair is not monochrome orange but YES I've got some new superstylin' glasses :D
Looks more like me too :0

Also looks like a colour-reduced photo :\ Don't know how I got that effect, really, but I didn't want any outlines. Heh.

I don't look that good in real life, I reckon, but damnit, I wanted my PHOTO POSE WINK WINK look. :] And I wanted to show off my DASHING GAY glasses that I love. :]

CnC means Command and Conquer! Conquer it!

EDIT: Updated just like that. No more shading on the hair, I just can't manage it at the moment and I want an avatar that I like :\

No.

D:

Actually, I do, but my hair obscures them. Thinking that, I didn't add ears and instead forgot about my hair length.

I'll go add longer hair, back in a minute.

SoZo> I'll try ;\

I know it seems so but Photo Reference That I Took To Determine Ear-Showage (Multiple Pictures) say no :<

But yeah, I'll probably make so that the earlobes are showing and the top is obscured by the hair, just for sense-making. If you think it looks weird, there's a fair chance (risk) more people do :\

Revamping. Later.

I think the flat shading of the hair makes it look like the hair is only longer behind the ears. (Thus the ears should be showing) The glasses just add to the effect.

Or maybe I am just rambling.

Although this one is quite overdone with the style, but owels. Same amount of colours, i just switched the pointless tache one for a highlight.

Don't be so self depricating larwick... I wouldn't say it's overworked... the hair's lovely... and it captures a certain youthful (dare i say it) boyish charm... (no I'm not gay) - having said that... some weird ass shit going on around your neck buddy? I can see what you're trying to do but that curved hilght around the neck line (of the teeshirt) is shouting at me?

I totally agree, it looks odd. I was taking in a bad aspect of the reference photo which shouldn't have been incorperated into this. Hopefully my edit solves the weirdness.

from this..

changed it because my hair is now a bit longer, after altering the hair I just thought why not re-do it all, I wasn't happy with the neck alignment of the first and I just wasn't a fan of the how it came out.

A bit better i think. The neck is too big though. It's all very flat and shapeless, remember the ridge of your nose follows through to your brow. The highlight on the shirt is a bit too light aswel.

Well, a lip ring. Labrets are usually farther down. :) I also have a nose ring but I didn't want to go as far to try and put that in there. I want to keep editing it, but I've got to step back from it for awhile before I can approach it again.

Very nice avatars everyone.

You may want to add a little shine on the lip ring, Aleiav.

I was feeling festive.

...and it looks just like me, too!

EDIT: Looking back, this was incredibly rushed. I feel sad again. :(

Oh wow, Ryona! I liked your previous avatar much, but this one is just cute! :D

<-- a bit of a departure. I couldn't get rid of the fad feeling at all, though. ;)

People say they like the piece, but I have mixed emotions about it.

I'm sorry.
It's runescape related.

Somehow, I am either blind, or I do not have an option to change my avatar (yet?).  :mean:

I didn't kill this topic, did I?  :blind:
