Official Pixelation Skin!

on: February 22, 2016, 10:34:44 am
So as you can tell, we have a new skin!  This skin represents about 2 years of work between my day job at Zynga, Chasm, and Life.  But I wasn't entirely alone, I was lucky to have some good help along the way from these fine folks

Ptoing: Worked on the original mockups for the new skin some years ago
Crow: helped a ton with server-side issues
pistachio: Did some great work on developing a new icon set. They've changed a bit since then, but the initial work was absolutely invaluable
Atnas: Gave lots of valuable feedback throughout the development as well as gathered the first batch of featured threads
CyangMou: The great work he's been doing with GoodReads is what lead to the Tag mod we now have installed

Thanks guys!  And also thanks to the rest of the mods who gave great feedback along the way.

We also now have a new domain name.  Read about that here: http://pixelation.org/index.php?topic=19726.0

A few things to note:

Featured threads and activities:
As part of our new goal as a moderating team to spark more activity and better content, we're going to start rolling out a major activity once a month and frequently highlight quality threads and place them prominently at the top of our site.

GoodReads and Tags:
One of the recurring problems we deal with at this forum is the loss of really great answers/resources to common problems and questions.  Part of the problem is it's currently pretty difficult to quickly find the types of threads you're interested in researching such as "dithering" or whatnot.  This is where the tags mod comes in.  I've completely rebuilt the tags mod to suit our needs here.  It's currently turned off for regular members (we may open that to everyone to use in the near future), but mods can now tag threads with common subjects and mark when it has especially good content.  In the coming weeks we will be converting our archived good reads threads into regular tags to keep an eye out for that

There will probably be issues with the skin
I tried my best to keep the skin bug free, but it's very likely I didn't catch everything.  If you see an issue, please let me know by posting in this thread.  Make sure you provide a screenshot of the issue, and tell me what browser and operating system you're on.

Known Issues:
        Missing page style: who's online
        Missing page style: Statistics Center
footer info widths need fixed 50%
post overflow issue with large images
avatar area of posts can overflow their width
        "last post" link style
        Mixed navigation font in Chrome
        Redirect board icon
        New posts icon needs redesign

agreed.  I'll be looking into better fonts, also making the text a bit higher contrast against the background colors

I think once it's sharpened up it should readable enough with the current contrast levels, its just the combination of the two that makes it painful to read.
Otherwise looking rather gorgeous.

Looking Good!  I remember you had a theme similar to this one before, was that a prototype?
(I know you are messing around with that font, but right now it seems
really big. Images also seem to be broken, although you probably know this!
Edit: Never mind, this was caused by accidentally viewing the site with GNU IceCat browser.)

Maybe it's just me, but the all-caps on the breadcrumb thing is killing my ocd -- a long string in all caps on a single line such as the following isn't very user friendly to go back to the exact section you want to be since it's harder to visually separate the crumbs without the camel case humps to fall back on when the spacing and >> aren't enough:

Pixelation »
    General »
    General Discussion »
    Official Pixelation Skin

Nitpick aside, this looks great! I prefer it over the old purple dark theme of ye olden days of Pixelation.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.  I'm really happy everyone is liking it :)

I just pushed a number of fixes including the unread posts/replies pages and font tweaks

@Surt:  Can you post screenshots so I can contrast the two?

Before the fix was pushed, fonts were clear but the POST REPLY /FEATURED/etc text looked misaligned. Now all texts are some amount blurry. I know that's the opposite of what others were reporting. Firefox 44.0.2 on Arch Linux x86_64, using infinality-bundle for font rendering.

Screenshot link with slight edit (inset blown-up section)

Doesn't seem too bad, but is especially apparent on the POST REPLY / FEATURED font.
Edit: I think the text zoom level may be wrong (non-default) in this shot. However, I just checked at default zoom and the blurring is equally present.
If you insist on being pessimistic about your own abilities, consider also being pessimistic about the accuracy of that pessimistic judgement.

if this is the degree of blurring that people are reporting, then it's way too subtle for me to care about - that's just OS font-antialiasing.  That looks fine to me.  I don't think there's much I can do to improve it - that's just how fonts are rendered by the browser/OS

Looks much blurrier than that for me Chrome on windows:

It looks like it isn't doing any hinting.

Android I think it's just the much higher pixel density masking the blur.

With the old theme text rendered fine for me.

Hmm. To me that also looks like OS font rendering.
 * Stem snapping on the H is different
 * Subpixel handling looks less sophisticated (but can't tell this for sure.. maybe just less sharpening applied.)
I guess I could probably also get a result like that by adjusting Infinality's settings.

At the moment I'm considering the blurring as only relevant on the POST REPLY/ TOPIC SUMMARY... font.. which I think probably IS badly hinted.

EDIT: with the help of woff2sfnt and FontForge.. it looks like it isn't hinted at all. I tried to autohint it, but encountered an error about characters containing "self-intersecting" paths when generating a TTF

EDIT2: hm, actually looks better when I dragged it into GIMP (which renders exactly the same, but without subpixel offsets). Also looks pretty decent with antialiasing off (except the left upright of the H, which looks too thin unAAed). I'll see if I can force it to autohint.

Yeah, I think the issue here is that the fonts used are badly hinted. For me, I mainly dislike the hinting on the main text font.

It appears the problem is the font I'm using "Titillium Web" doesn't scale to smaller sizes well at all.  If the font is set to 100%, then it's perfectly sharp.  I'll push a change for this when I get home.  Thanks guys

Certain posts tend to get squeezed to the side pretty badly. Seems to be related to the length of the poster's "personal text". (Or whatever that customizable text field below the avatar/postcount/karma is called)

Happens in Firefox 44.0.2. Can also confirm for IE 11.0.9600. Windows 7. Could check Chrome, Safari & Opera when I'm back at home, but suspect it happens across browsers.

Happens here, among other places: http://wayofthepixel.net/index.php?topic=17772.msg158549#msg158549

Here's something - are we missing the jump-to-last-post link when inside a subforum?

The little orange dots on left indicate which post is the oldest one you haven't seen yet, so that's good but not what I'm referring to at the moment.

In the far right column, the last poster is listed and clicking the username goes to his profile, but there's usually also an icon one can click to jump to that very last post.

Ought to be where I added the red circles, I think:

(screenshot taken while using Chrome)

I for one use this forum feature a lot.

___

Awesome job on this skin! Super happy it's here.
All fonts look fine for me, by the way.

Indigo, you're welcome. Figured you couldn't fix what you weren't aware of, so reporting it seemed the sensible thing to do.

Beyond the few issues here and there--and there's certainly less of them than I'm used to from different communities--the new theme certainly looks good and works well. Thanks for all the hard work! ;D

Yeah, right, that's it, under the title of topic.

Like Mathias, I was missing it sorely, but prolly would never figured it until you mentioned it.

Now that you say it, it makes sense where it is. Maybe it could need a better visual indicator that it's an actual link to click on.

But generally, it's just a position I'd never suspect, because usually it's a mini icon next to the last poster's name on far right.

Now that I know, it's fine for me, but others might still be confused.

OH MY GOSH haha yeah . . . there it is. Dang that's some serious camouflage.

In terms of web ui design, it seems inconsistent that the actual "Last Post" link isn't styled like a text link - no UP state color or even rollover (that's something I feel is missing - rollovers for the smaller text links [besides the pointy hand cursor], which I could write off as a style decision but do think it hurts usability. You might even try using javascript to dynamically change the default UP state color and generate an OVER state color based on adding/subtracting points from H,S, and B. We used this technique on our last site with big success; worked really well).

When on the main, clicking the thread name is meant to take you to the last post, right?

---

For real though, again, I can't stress enough how happy this skin is making me, despite any small hang-ups I or anyone has. Designing/working on a forum skin is no small task.

And this skin is the best Pix has ever had.
Compare it to the last custom skin, started by miascugh. I don't think he was ever able to finish it:   ANTIQUE PIX01   ANTIQUE PIX02

Favicon

Reply #58 on: February 25, 2016, 10:26:40 am
Here's a suggestion that's more a mental effect than anything else - why not update the favicon to put the seal on this new skin.
I haven't really been around here for a while and this skin's really helped make me want to haunt this place again.

A freshened up favicon would be great.
Current one is an oldie but still matches the new skin, so just a color update or maybe nix the bg and just have the "P" on transparency?

It really is, though.

Alright . . . I hope we can seal this thread up soon and move on with things, I know Indigo would like to call this thing done asap, but 3 small things:

1.
Can the "Hello [username]" at very top right be a link to our profiles, if we're logged in?
That was always how it worked before. I see the new orange bar with the Profile button.

2.
Posts per page, in threads.
10 feels way too little. I'd suggest at least 25. Don't want it too high for everyone.
I don't see a personal setting for this. I'd set mine to ~50 if there was one.

3.
Image size control! For those that post massive, layout breaking images, or if they just want to scale their image down a little.
I propose modifying the existing image tag or adding a new one with width control ability.
With BBcode, this is how you'd do it:

BBCode usage:
Code: [Select]
[imgw={NUMBER1}]{URL}[/imgw]
HTML replacement:
Code: [Select]
<img src={URL} width={NUMBER1} />
Help line/example:
Code: [Select]
[imgw={pixel width}]{image's URL}[/imgw]
Image's aspect ratio shouldn't be altered.

Really not a high priority for me seeing how there's a profile button right below it on the Nav

2.

Done, 25 it is.

This already works:
Code: [Select]
[img width={pixel width}]{img URL}[/img]

Obviously even more thanks for this amazing skin, Indigo. It's beautiful and warms me in places.
I decided to use the forums for a little while to get used to things before I would recommend anything (because often you just get used to certain things). I only have two things at present that irk me.

The first is the "there are unread posts" little icon. I use this religiously, so it's something I noticed very quickly and that impacts how I use the site a lot.

(Made this wide as an excuse to test the image size thing.)

At first it was completely unnoticeable to me (don't know if you want to change that to accommodate newer users), but now it's easy for me to spot them. The problem I am still facing is the small size (at least compared to the previous skin where it was a massive "NEW" box).
Would you be able to make the clickable area slightly larger? Making the actual icon larger is up to you, and maybe you could add an edge or two to it to attract the eye more, but mostly it's just inconvenient to click. #firstworldproblems

The second issue I have is the anchor text under your username in the top right (the links). I just struggle to read this and I'm not a fan of blue on blue with blue. Might just be a personal gripe though, so not really any priority.

Mostly though I'm just really enjoying using this new skin and it's definitely helped activity.

You can actually change that for yourself already, right here. Which is why I'd also like to re-discuss the global change to 25. I think it's a bit much.

I also prefer 10. I had it at 25 for a short while years ago, but its easier to remember what page of a thread certain replies are on if they are grouped in 10s, for me at least. I'm aware I can switch this back to 10 in my personal settings, but I think it might become overwhelming for those not aware of this setting.

I'm liking this new skin a lot, but I hate how blurry the post text is (which I see has already been mentioned). The colours are fine, the problem is just the font - it doesn't include a bitmap version (or is too new; I've heard Windows ignores embedded bitmaps for all but a few legacy fonts) and is not hinted well enough for it to render cleanly at this size.

Playing around in Firebug, I disabled the Titillium Web font and kept just the "Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" part of the CSS and the forum looks lovely and clear (I'd probably change the size to be a little smaller though).

Edit: It took me too long to see that to get to the other account settings you have to mouse-over the "Modify Profile" bit. Maybe put a little down arrow icon next to things that open menus on mouse-over? I've set it to use sidebars (I'm so glad that's an option!) because I just know that I'll forget again.

Just realized something under the "Forum profile" settings (didn't read the whole thread, so forgive me if it was already mentioned):
The options for the messanger seem a bit outdated for me (ICQ, AIM, MSN, YIM). I don't know which are the commonly used, but it's defenitely missing Skype I think and just four seems too few. And maybe it would be possible to add some options for social media platforms like Twitter, or to commonly used art-showcase sites like Deviantart or Pixeljoint. Or am I overlooking something?

I feel like no one uses any of those anymore (isn't MSN gone for example?). I don't think I've talked on AIM the last decade, not sure if ICQ is still alive and if it is, if anyone outside of Israel still uses it?

So yeah, I agree with Super17 that Twitter, Skype, Facebook, Youtube and Twitch are waaaaay more prominent than any of those.

Even though I use AIM more regularly than any other communication platform, I still agree that the list of IM options is outdated to the point of uselessness.

It would be nice to have something more like a textbox where you can enter your stuff line-by-line, Network: Username, and to have the relevant links built based on what "Network" is, with unrecognized ones just left as plaintext. That way the forum could have support for more networks added (or old ones removed) over time without losing contact info. I doubt there's a premade plugin for that, though - plugin-makers seem obsessed with having dedicated fields for everything.

Lovely! ... Well, almost afraid to suggest it since deviantArt is not exactly the place of choice to be when it comes to Pixel Art but it seems as the scope of this place has already widened with low-poly stuff and sketches and lots of people also sharing traditional art, there could be interest in linking to deviantArt profiles as well.

This is not very important, but perhaps making it so the Offline and Online icons look different enough and more evident could be good.

Removed: AIM, ICQ, YIM, MSN
added: Twitter, Skype, Pixeljoint

Are there others people feel strongly about adding?

I'd be really happy about adding "Deviantart" too

Regarding social networks (just from a modern standpoint):
Facebook might also make a lot of sense for many people, just considering the size.
Tumblr and Instagram might be important too

Rather than adding dedicated Tumblr, Instagram, etc fields, how about just having more "website" slots? I'm sure that should be fairly easy to implement, at least compared to my other suggestion (textbox of network-username pairs). For IM programs, protocol-specific fields allow the forum to build specialised program-launching links, but for social networks like Facebook and Instagram where it'll just be linking to a webpage, there's no benefit in having a dedicated field, those can all be treated as regular websites. The one website slot that's there already lets you set a URL and a Title. For social networks, people could put the network name as the title (e.g. "Facebook").

The lone website slot made sense back when many people had a personal website and before social networks, but nowadays most people have a number of "websites" in the form of social network pages like dA, FB, etc.

I hear ya eishiya, but currently there's not an easy way of doing that so I'd rather not bother.  I did add a few more though; Tumblr, Facebook, and DeviantArt.

That's curious. I would've imagined adding N generic website slots would be easier than adding N specific-website slots with icons. I haven't administrated Simple Machines though, so I wouldn't know. Hopefully a modification for it will come along.

To be honest, I don't really see the point. If all else fails, just throw it into your signature..?

to give a little context, adding additional link slots comes built-in with SMF. That's what I'm using to add new icons.  I can also add generic text slots, but these have a number of issues:
  • you'd ideally want two input values for a generic slot - one for the label, one for the URL itself (so it shows up like this: My Website Link).  SMF only supports one input. I could make a mod for more inputs, but that would be a lot more work compared to just using the feature that already works.  ROI is very low
  • If we just allow for one input, the url, they can easily be quite long and overflow the horizontal space that's available under the avatar and look really ugly
  • We could allow for BBCode so you can make your own link with a label, but now it has the problem of people abusing that slot for unintended things like images and whatnot

And like Crow said, if you really really want a text link, just put it in your signature

Is Bruce going to be a permanent part of the logo? I assumed it was a joke referring to the older logos and would get removed after a while, but I'd like to know for certain. Jump scares/sudden unexpected movement make my adrenal gland go nuts, and he's given me a couple of scares already. I don't expect the logo to get changed just because of me, of course! If there are no plans to make it a still image already, I can just block that specific image so it doesn't show up.

Considering that this is how the old logo looked and worked as well, I suppose it'll stay. Sorry about that~

Could tooltips (title attributes) be added to the various icons, like "Popular Thread", "New post", etc? No set of icons can be self-explanatory to everyone, and on the web we have the luxury of tooltips to remedy that problem.

Could we add a super important feature where if the konami code is entered, a full recreation of shaq fu becomes playable on the index page(or a cool image pops up like the other boring websites)

May've uncovered a bug - when wrapping a width-defining, inline image reference with url tags, the end url tag gets stripped once post is submitted, and all content after the url open tag becomes part of the link.

This post http://pixelation.org/index.php?topic=19566.msg172477#msg172477
is an example.

___

Also, if you try the same thing without defining the image's width (because you want to make an image clickable) it looks like the image resize script thing is causing the url tags to be removed altogether.
This means we can't post a non-resized image inline and it be clickable. Just the cost of having the image resize thing active?

When posting a wider than content area image it gets scaled down to an NPOT scale and then cannot be zoomed to a clean integer scaling. For example.

Ideally it'd scale down by a POT, so that zooming can restore it to 1:1, or alternatively don't down scale below 1:1.

Thanks for reporting that! Images that are downscaled by the CSS are now first displayed at 100% zoom after the first click, then zoomed as expected on any following ones. If you find any other/new bugs, please do tell :P
