Bathroom Wall

on: December 23, 2015, 07:39:27 pm
Hello guys!

I'm trying to design a bathroom wall for my game. The previous version had a bland, boring single pink color. I'm trying to find a pattern to fill in the void so to speak.

I looked at reference pictures and got this:

Source: http://www.tileideaz.com/small-blue-bathroom-tiles.html

So I decided to add a floor moulding and did this:

But then I figured it was too busy for a background so I did this:

I reduced the saturation and brightness of the background basically.

I like the way it looks but I'd like some feedback about it. I think it looks a lot better than how it used to be before:

Let me know how you think the background I'm working on right now could be improved.

Thanks!

The scale is too small, it reads almost as noise.

I agree with DawnBringer. You can probably use even larger tiles than I did, and then you'd have room to add patterns/flowers to some of them like some older bathrooms. I can't find an example of one of those though.

I also think that the dark tiles contrast too much.

The lightest tiles blend in with the seams (my edit isn't doing a good job at fixing that though, I don't know what colour would be appropriate).

I'd also suggest using something other than blue for the bulk of the background. Now the background and the character have similar colours. The pink one didn't look much like a bathroom, but it did make the characters stand out.

Thank you!

@BatElite:

Thanks so much for your input. It means a lot to me. Very useful!

I tried doing larger tiles, changing color, reducing contrast, making the darkest color lighter too.

I'm still not convinced however. I think it's easier to look at now but I'll get there through experimentation.

Before: Now:

What do you think? Where should I go from there do you think?

I think it's good as it is now. (The 1 pixel bits in between kinda confuse me tho')

I think that's the best so far. You have double seams where two tiles meet though (I'm assuming you're using 64*64 tiles), so I suggest you shrink the tiles slightly (pretty much my edit) because I suspect it'll become noticable in larger spaces.

In regards to going from here, you should make a few alternative tiles so the pattern won't noticably repeat but otherwise you can probably move on.
