Preparing for LD34

on: November 25, 2015, 10:18:20 pm
Well I'm kinda preparing for Ludum Dare 34 and as I'm not allowed to use the art I make before the event , I'm going to practice the style I chose for my LD Game.

(I don't really like my white tones)

Well any kind of critic is appreciated!

I think that a pale orange pink would work well as your lighter shade of snow.  Here are some references:

Thanks for your feedback!

I tried it out , but I'm not too sure if this is what you meant:

Some ideas:

I lowered his nose and eyes and used up more of the area around his face to get more detail into it.
Made his tail thicker (as he has in the reference). It doesn't read well because of the background colour though.
Reshaped his ears.

Yeah, something like that.  One nice thing about changing the color so dramatically is that it reveals a weakness in your original design: you are using the lighter shade more as an outline than as a value.  Look at where the snowman touches the ground.  You have a ring of the lighter shade around him.  That doesn't make any sense.  Instead you should figure out where the light source is coming from, make that side light and make the other side dark.  Look at some references on how to shade a sphere.

@Ambivorous
Awesome! :O I love those new ears! Yeah I didn't like the way I made the tail but yours looks way better! (Although it wouldn't be readable enough in this way as it's too near the face)
Also those new colors you used look way better then mine! :D Thank you very much!

@Glak
Yeah I intended it to be more of a outline but didn't want it to be too plane nor add a new color. That's the reason I'm not too sure about the orangish snow as it clearly makes the darker tone a shade.
Not too sure how I'm going to handle it in LD although I don't intent to use such a drastic light.

Well the developing part of Ludum Dare 34 is over and I'm quite happy with half the art I made for my game

I really like the style I used and I would like to make it more solid so here a few pictures.

I would love criticism on color choice, the style and things overall.

(Here a little screenshot)

I don't really like the design I choose for the plants, but for only 48h (with around 16h of sleep) it's not bad (or at least I think so).

(Here is a screenshot of my framework development, so this is just developer art (not ment to be good))

And here another random art work:

Would love some criticism on any of them :D
