[WIP][C+C] Remove the "Drawn in Paint" look?

on: November 15, 2015, 11:01:28 am
Hello.

I am a completely new to drawing 2D graphics and to this site. I have put together Castlevania and Contra fan games in Game Maker with recycled sprites but I always wanted to get better at creating my own graphics.

Haha I know they are terrible, but I guess I have to start somewhere. I can't quite put my finger on why my sprites look wrong. I was hoping some of you guys could give me some advice..do I use too many colors? bad shading?

I used dark colors because my game is going to be in gloomy environments such as castles and tombs.

Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,

How do you do the shading on the greys(legs) and red(torso) seems liek way too many colors.
Maybe start with a single color and apply one darker, one lighter first?

Bahototh, you would recommend 3 shades for each color? Do you think it would simply make it look better? I ask because I am not concerned with making the sprites fit within the limitations of the SNES or some kind of old console.

Even with that, you think it is still too many colors?

Thank you so much for the replies, guys.

Haha I don't mean to knock Paint. I should have named the Subject differently.

I can't tell if I made the standing animation better or worse

Thoughts? He may look like he walked through oil, but the backgrounds in the game will be dark.

As in this dark:

Whenever animating, reducing color count is your friend.  I counted 42 colors.

An edit reduced to 10:
