Space Ship

on: September 01, 2015, 09:45:42 pm
I drew this for todays #Pixel_dalies on twitter.

I don't intend to finish it, I'd rather draw something new from scratch.
I know it might seem rude to ask for advice when I won't put any more work into the piece, but I need this rule, otherwise I'll end up spending tons of time on polishing, when I really need more practice drawing quick things.
But any insight or edits will still be appreciated, I want to learn as much as I can from this.
The background was a last minute rush and the perspective is a bit wonky and the ship looks pretty short. I could have added more of the green light from the thruster trail(also a rush job) reflecting on the ship.

Maybe 3-4 hours, but the idea was just to make something quick..  :blind:

Looks really nice!
I like the variety of pixel placement.
Very fun to look at zoomed in or out.

Some thoughts:

The 2 things you've identified I definitely agree with.

Perspective
It def is a little weird to look at.
It's like there's an alternating illusion between him flying sideways or away from us.
I think this is the result of wanting to show us the "best part" of everything.
And is easily forgiveable, a lot of side scrolling video game art works on those exact principles, and they remain appealing and relevant.
But it could improve your composition to use a more decisive perspective.

Thruster Light
You could go as crazy or not crazy as you want with this.
If it were mine I'd probly spend a couple hours blending more colors in to show a larger fall off.

Composition
Yah there isn't much to the scene.
Tweaking the perspective to behind the ship would give him somewhere to visually go.
To a planet, blackhole, or whatever.

Color Balance
I really like the grayish blue colors.
Maybe spread them around a little more.

Contrast
Maybe push some areas to a wider key.
Darker darks, lighter lights.

Yeah, I'm not used to work with perspective like this. But the ship also has a shape that makes it harder to read, this was the inspiration.
Shape wise it's supposed to be really thin, with the center part being the bulkiest and the back and front being wedge-shaped.

Love the edit, I thought about adding more of the steel, since the red makes it a bit monotonous.
The composition is a great point, I forgot all about that.  :y:

I also noticed the thruster trails really ruin the perspective.. since they don't follow it at all.. Should have been more like your perspective edit.

Color me green. This would take me DAYS. XD

It might look overwhelming but I was pretty focused and the shading follows some very simple rules, it's pretty much the same all over the ship.

Edit: The perspective stuff made me curious so I threw together a quick 3D model mockup.

Not completely faithful model, but I can see where the perspective is off..

I can't see the inspiration nor the 3D mockup..

Yeah I think the perspective looks a bit odd, but I think it's acceptable.
Also I think the thruster beam looks a bit flat ( could be rounder)
Also I think the whole space ship design looks a bit unusual? or at least to me? but whatever
PixelPilerdriver used the only thing I could say I don't like on the color side (thruster color)
I don't even know what I remember seeing this ,but I love it :D (Maybe to less contrast but I think the color choice is great!)

Maybe 3-4 hours, but the idea was just to make something quick..  :blind:

wow O: To tell the truth I don't think I'm even able to do something like this in any amount of time :D

Fixed the links..  ::)
The design is quite unusual. But that's what I found interesting with the design I used as inspiration.

After looking at the model, the ship makes more sense.
Which confirms what I meant about the perspective oddity being sort of an Illusion.
I don't think you're reinforcing the overall shape well enough.
And that might just be inherent of the design at this angle.
The reference you used has a very visible back end surface.
You've chosen to pinch the back of your ship with a closed edge, like a blade.
My edit is perhaps too car like, wide with a dual thruster symmetry.
So stick with your design, it's cool.
I'd just say add some better indications of axial surfaces, with a bit of change in shape to keep it interesting.
Even if you make them very thin.

Also, have you heard of Sketchfab?
Makes it really nice and simple to share 3D art with others.
No need to screenshot, we can just spin it around.
Unless you want to show a specific angle, like you've given us, it's great for just exploring the model and getting an understanding of its shape.
Even I have a few silly models there.  :blind:

Warning: their latest update was broken for me.
This guide helped me fix it.

the ship is really cool I love ur style  :y:

jusy because ur inspired by the design doesn't mean u need to be inspired by the perspective.
basically there's just a few conflicting lines that cause the main perspective issue.
sry can't illustrate but try drawing thick bright lines over the edges of vertical planes and u should see that they simply dont line up. it shouldn't take that much work to get it to look like the ship is side-on (easiest fix).
