Minotaur

on: January 22, 2014, 06:19:37 pm
So I am making a minotaur and I am trying to make it my best piece. I have been learning anatomy for a few days now and thus I have tried to apply my knowledge of Anatomy into this. I have no idea about muscles etc though but the basic proportions taught to a beginner. Help me fix everything you notice.

Thanks in advance.

You have a good start going! I'm no anatomy expert, but a few things stuck out to me when looking at this:

-This could be me misinterpreting the perspective, but the minotaur's torso seems rather short; same thing goes for his neck.

-He doesn't appear to have elbows, which both confuses the eye and makes his arms look stiff.

-More a matter of a personal preference, but his feet look odd for a minotaur. Maybe make them a little more like hooves (or go with what Mathias suggested to add more emphasis to the minotaur aspect)?

-His head could use some work. It's pretty obvious that it's a minotaur, but you might want to take a closer look at the shape of bull heads.

I also made a really rough edit to clarify a few things. I got way carried away with the shading and detailing, but I hope it helps for something!

Anyhow, I'm looking forward to seeing how this progresses! Good luck. :)

I am definitely going to add those goat legs. And Amorphous, that is fucking awesome edit man! I am going step by step, trying to complete one part of the time at a time.

I'll fix up all the issues you've mentioned in few hours when I get free again. But for now here's an update:

Oh man this is way too difficult to make...

Update:

I have removed the abs because I remembered the pose is like this because Minotaur is supposed to lean forward/bent little bit and show aggressiveness. I am not so sure how to make it look bent forward except giving dark-tones to abdomen, which I have already done. I have also added goat legs.

Any better?

It's just rough blocking btw. And I still don't think they look or even resemble goat legs even a bit. Gah, someone help please!

IMHO...

- His right forearm and hand seems very small.
- His thighs don't seem to be connected with any hips, they just attach to the lower stomach.
- His hooves look a bit like pig's feet, as the "toes" are too long.
- Its eyes are huuuge! Not really a mistake as such, but it does make it look less like a bull's head.
- To make it look like it's leaning forward, you need to widen the shoulders in relation to its hips, as its shoulders would be closer. Right now, the distance between the thighs give the impression of very wide hips.

To improve on the legs, I think you would benefit from a good reference instead of experimenting so much.

Well, I decided to remake an old piece, basically to see how much I have improved and maybe finish something good this time.

I need to work on reverse knees. Anyway, focus was to take a look at the structure of his upper body. Hope this helps.

Anatomically speaking the elbows start roughly at the bottom of the rib cage.
Also, shoulders are big, a lot bigger then people seem to account for. Don't be afraid to exaggerate their size, especially for burly demi-humans like Orcs and Minotaurs.
The same goes for forearms, they are big, a lot bigger then people seem to account for, don't be afraid to exaggerate these as well.
