We need YOUR help!

on: June 09, 2015, 08:01:03 am
My first post was pretty terrible, but i just need some help. (also still not sure how to post images yet..)

I am really keen on making a pixel platform game (school major project) and i need to learn how to make pixel art and animations. So i wanted to refer to this community of bright and creative artists to help me!

So anyone who can give me any insight onto how to go about drawing pixel art and animations.

My idea for my character is a regular guy who can cast fireballs. No capes.

I know its a very rough idea but me and my friends are still coming up with ideas for more characters and after we learn to draw pixel art (which I'm hoping you guys can teach us) we should be posting more and more of our art and getting your feedback on our game/art.

Any feedback is appreciated

Thanks

AG

This should get you started. Also, just try to find video timelapses of people creating pixel art. Use references.

Not a lot to say myself right now but it's worth checking out some good old pixelly tuts:

Tsugumo's (mirror)
2d Tile Art Basics
This one (Seiken Densetsu 3) is a pretty long read but has a tile breakdown towards the end.

A few of the Feature Chests and Commercial Critiques are goldmines, a lot have to do with sidescrollers/tiling so check them out.

Other than this, general stuff:

Decide on the art direction
Work on more than one asset at a time (to keep everything meshing, for time constraints, for bridging the skill gulf from 1st asset to last asset)
Start with the big simple shapes then draw in the small details
Use reference (you can learn as much from a great ref as you can learn from a great tutorial)
Use placeholders
Prioritize assets
etc.

These are just the basics, if you need me to elaborate on any of those give me a shout.
Looking forward to seeing some of your project, and good luck with it man.

So I have read up on all the tiles and such, BUT I would love if anyone could recommend tutorials or just help me make awesome pixel characters and how to go about animating them.

I have said a rough guideline of my character above.

Any feedback is appreciated

Thanks

There really are no shortcuts with pixel art. Just like with any other art. You have to do tests and practice to learn and get better. Until you have done a test sprite of your character, or at least a sketch of them in any other medium, I doubt anyone can give any more helpful constructive criticism. Once you do though, the fine people on Pixelation give fantastic help and recommendations!

We also don't know what style you will go for or what you like soo.... A good point to start with any pixel art is to look at sprites from games you like the pixel art of, and take inspiration from them (don't just edit them or copy them straight off though). You can find loads of tutorials here: http://wayofthepixel.net/index.php?topic=3467.0 (scroll down for Pixel art tutorials), and there also lots of links to tutorials on Pixel Joint: http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixels/tutorials.asp

Good luck with your project! :)
