Pixel Filters anyone?

on: August 24, 2006, 12:40:57 am
Could someone maybe add a pixelized filter to this piece:

I'm trying to prove a point that someone traced because that person said they completely pixeled this piece:

It's obvious they didn't though and both images are exactly the same...  Anyway, I don't have any high tech art programs, so I can't really apply a filter.

I think he might have traced over it and picked the pallete out of it, but the dithering seems actually quite human.

I ran it trough a quick dithering filter in GGale and the dithering patterns are quite diferent, there must be atleast a little bit of human fine-tuning if this actually is color reduced by a machine.

Here's some reduction, especially pay attention to the pixelplacement of the hand ...

I did it in photoshop and it looks very different.  I am not 100% sure its a color redux - more of a tracing?

Maybe he has a different program so different dither outcomes.
Anyways, I did it in photoshop, but I tried a few different things.
  • Tried a simple reduction, but used the numbers of colours he used with a pattern dither reduction method. This came out a bit different, but not far.
  • Copied his pallette and reduced the picture using his palette with a pattern dither reduction method. Was similar to the above.
  • Last I tried reducing it without any dithering. This came out the closest to his in terms of pixel-placement similiarities, even though there was no dithering. There were just a lot of pixels that were almost exactly the same. In the pictuer, note the placement of the highlights on the shoulder.
I'll post all three pictures later. The key here though is the picture and all the details, even if not pixel perfect, is near exactly the same. I figure this was a reduction/clean-up job. The main things that make a big difference is the gun and legs.
Like I said before, I did this in photoshop, maybe another program can dither up th same results as his picture.

EDIT: here's the image

I'm pretty sure the dithering is handmade, but as I wrote, look at the pixels of the hand, they're mostly identical to the original, just some color adjustments.

Looks like a basic colour reduction and cleaned up with added dithering (mostly) to make it look as if done by themself. I mean, look at the shape of the gun.. seems messed up to me.

I think it's pretty obvious this was reduced and redithered.

Yeah, the only thing he did was redither.  I tried all the options in Photoshop and made this handy dandy animated gif with his palette:

2 second delay

I am ashamed to say in this instance I prefer what photoshop has done.

Oh well, you can't fault this person for trying to hone his dithering/shading skills, it is a shame he tried to pass it off as 100% original.
