Backgrounds

on: April 19, 2015, 07:10:23 pm
Okay so I am making some backgrounds for a client. And due to being an unskilled pixel artist or artist in general I decided to put whatever I have done so far, here so that I can improve the piece and as an artist in general.

Here's what I have got so far:

The current palette wasn't really decided of. I just picked some random colors.

Help me give rock textures, forms, improving the composition, colours, light etc along with explanation so that I can understand it even more.
 Thank you!

Actually i kind of like how the rock looks, kind of simplistic.

I think you should focus in improving the water part, right now it just looks like a blue floor.

Imho I don't think you've experimented enough, try blocking in shapes for the rocks some more. And I would suggest decreasing the canvas size by a lot. Try to think about things like the rocks creating distorted shadows in the water, where is your lightsource coming from, how the water will change the colour of the rocks from the lightbouncing around, etc.

Not to be rude, but atm it doesn't seem like you've done a lot and it's quite hard to offer some hard criticism for the stage that you are at (which is just really rough shapes).

Don't forget to look at references for colour https://www.google.ca/search?q=inside+of+a+cave&safe=off&es_sm=93&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=0Dc1VfXBAsGdyASRw4GoDg&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1366&bih=681#

Here's a sloppy edit that I made, the colours aren't really that great, but I downsized your piece a lot and changed around the whole composition by sketching over your piece. Hopefully it'll give you a few ideas

Great advice Skittlefuck! Thank you so much.

As for the size, I can not downsize it due to the instructions from client. Seeing your edit, I thought of redoing the composition to make it more interesting.

Here's the new one:

Still haven't blocked out proper shapes for rocks yet. Thinking of blocking out shapes then starting shading and all.
But before even doing that I received a note from the client that the background has to be scrollable as in it could be repeated... Not sure if this can be continued to make it like his requirements. If not I might have to redo it.

I think the water would be a lot brighter, less saturated. Water only happens to be blue most of the time because the sky is too. Typically it takes on its surrounding's colors almost entirely.

Okay he wants it to be completely loop able and doesn't want water or anything in it.

So here's the update:

He wants it to look like Pukahuna's piece:

Am I doing the same things over and over again?

Also if you can help me with textures and forms? I think I suck at rocks and caverns.... That's why I decided to draw(live sketch) and shade some stones to get the idea of how rocks would look.
