Backgrounds, Scandals, and The Question Of Life

on: April 17, 2015, 10:33:29 pm
Ok, serious question here. I'm trying to do backgrounds and I'm really quite bad at it. I came up with one that I found to be somewhat easier to look at and not cringe... can you try to help me with it? I just can't seem to make a good background. It is supposed to be mountains with trees, however it didn't come out like I wanted it too. I do realize that my current canvas is limiting me, however I do have to do it in a fairly small canvas, so that it goes along with the small pixel art I'm doing.

Grab a panoramic picture from off the internet and use that as a reference. It looks like you are trying to pull directly from your imagination which is tough even for experienced artists.

Thank you. I actually was making it up as I go along! LOL I had no idea that that would make it harder.

The main problem is I can't tell what I'm looking at.
Agree with working from reference.

I noticed the sky in the background has a few different colors in it...are they supposed to represent mountains in the distance? Or is it just a transitioning of colors?  Either way, I think the lower set of clouds might be a little much.  I like the way the rocks are turning out though, keep it up!
