[WIP][C+C] Feline fencer

on: April 16, 2015, 12:46:38 am
Hi Pixelation!

This is my first time posting here. I started this a while ago, but I wanted some advice before advancing. Mostly on the anatomy and the perspective.
Any crits are very welcome. Thanks! ::)

The stance feels a little off. The legs appear very stiff - perhaps add a bit more bend to the knees? The front foot also has a strange angle relative to the body. Since it looks like she would have stepped into that pose, bringing her foil up, the foot should point a little more outwards towards the direction she's facing and bringing her body to point. The foil itself looks a little odd - the guard seems to be at an incorrect angle for the direction of the blade. It looks like the blade is bending and off-centered where it's connected to the guard.

The breast also seems a little weird, in that it's parallel to the bottom of your canvas when the body itself is at an angle. I'd raise up the rear breast a little bit, perhaps.

Thanks for the input! Tried to work on the things you pointed out:

Now I see how the previous pose looked weird.

That looks a lot better! Nicely done. Everything looks quite a bit more natural now.

If her sword arm is so foreshortened that we can't see it at all, why is her sword so long in comparison? Right now, it looks like she was amputated, and had a weird nail thing grafted to her stub. The sickly green color palette isn't helping matters! :x
The pixeling is nice, but the perspective and anatomy are questionable. I'm not sure what her legs are doing under her dress, and her arm appears very long.

Yeah, anatomy and perspective are aways a problem to me  :'(

Tried to fix it a little bit (and to explain the legs)

Dunno, I'm still not convinced, hahah. I myself am terrible at anatomy, so I can't really help you, beyond saying something feels off to me. =(

I always find that if I'm having anatomy problems, it's best to modify the pose with something classical (for example comic book artists have regular sets of poses they reuse). Maybe you could tackle the foreshortening by revealing more of the elbow?

-snip-

saw hawken's edit, thought that was the pose. as a fencer (admittedly not epee but still), going up against someone with their hand in that position would make it stunningly easy to hit their arm.

Thanks for the feedback, guys!

@hawken Thanks for the advice. However, I'm trying to challenge myself on this. Basically all my pieces don't have a difficult perspective angle like this one, so I'm trying to get off the comfort zone. That just turned out to be harder than I thought.

If you're learning perspective, thousands of quick sketches would serve you much better than spending three hours on a pixel-art piece, hahah. If the base drawing is bad, no amount of pixeling is going to fix it.

If you're a lonely artist like me, who hates practicing alone, check out a paintchatting community, like niko's paintchat, or mangamasters. Lots of fun, and if you're like me, you'll learn faster that way than drawing alone. Having a bunch of people watching in the room keeps me honest, hahah.
