Tried both Safari and Chrome. Defaults back to [none] on save.

OK, did a quick test and it seems you can not use https:// urls. In case of linking to something like dropbox you can just edit the url to http:// and it should work fine.

Crow, do you have a clue why this might be?

IIRC https is a secured address of the normal http so maybe the host site is blocking out the forum thinking that it is some site trying to attack.

Seems to be a known SMF bug.
