A face (WIP)

on: August 15, 2006, 10:56:53 am
I did this face inspired by Helm's Have you seen the yellow sign? and Tesla images. I used this photo of a pez dispenser as reference.

Is this thing coming out alright?

Yeah it's pretty cool.

Palettes like these I think mostly work when there's space to represent every shade in a bit more than lines and single pixels. Maybe you need to tone down the hue shifting a bit, unify it then. But what do I know, I did worse!

i think 14 colors may just be too much for a piece this small.  you could do everythign you wanted i think with 8 colors, probably fewer, and it would show off the color mixing.  at the moment, there are so many colors that are so close together that they all just push each other down instead of bringing each other out.  just my opinion though this is very good color study
A mistake is a mistake.
The same mistake twice is a bad habit.
The same mistake three or more times is a motif.

I think the use of many colors works though.  perhaps a few are unneccessary but i find it very hard to distiguish between individual pixels without zoom.  Its so smooth and has a lot of depth.  Nice reference too  ;)

It's relaxing. You get better without having to do empty-art practise pieces a lot. Then when you do a full-art piece that is your own, you can use the new skills in the name of something real inside you.

Thanks for your comments. I think I agree with what most of what you said actually. For this particular image though, I think I'll continue with this palette and style but I'll definitely keep in mind what you said for future projects.

And that edit miascugh - I love it! :) As for my connection to mixnmojo. Apart from being a fan and reader since the beginning of the site, my own (now abandoned) site LucasHacks is hosted on the mojo network.

And finally, after a few million mouse clicks, here is the latest WIP of the face...

im sure it'll look mch better when you add his hair/hat cus atm it does look like his head ends there.. Nice use of the colours, but at that size I do agree a lot of them don't make a difference. if it was 50% larger than you could of maybe got some better details out of using those greens and blue shades..

don't think he needs as much darkness under each cheek, it makes him look like he's got a moustache, if you wanted that then keep it.  ;)..

Well the more I look at it the more I like it, good job  :P
I've not got anything interesting to type here..

Let's call this finished then. I kinda rushed it in the end which shows I guess. Oh well.

He looks like Hulk Hogan. That's pretty sweet.
