Character design and some animations [C+C] [WIP]

on: December 09, 2014, 09:52:11 pm
I've been working on some art + animations recently for a game a friend is trying to make. I don't have too many details about what it's going to be like, but she has said all the stuff I've done so far is fine, so I figure I'll just keep working on this until I learn more details.

Side walk cycle:

Possible diagonal front pose if I need to animate a diagonal:

I would appreciate some help on stuff I'm getting wrong. I made this in Paint and animated it in GIMP. I'll try to keep updating and improving this as I need to draw new things and have things to improve on existing art. :)

EDIT: Hosting the animations somewhere else as they stopped animating a minute after I made the post and could not be fixed by reloading the page or using a different browser.   :-\

You have a good start on the side view. It's quite fluid and generally nice to look at. One thing it's lacking though is vertical movement, whenever someone takes a stride their entire body moves up and down, being at it's highest when the leg is pointing straight down aligned with the body. I'd suggest looking at videos of people walking since observing the real thing will do you more good than just hearing it from people.

From the lovely Richard Williams. Here's a blog post I found talking about it:

Okay, thanks a lot for the advice, it looks quite a bit better now.

I tried to make the arm animation smoother and tried to make it go in more of an arc so that the hand is lowest when it's pointing straight down. I thought his hair looked stiff so I animated the little bit of hair at the front. I adjusted the legs to fit with the bobbing motion.

I'm probably going to do running animations and walking backward animation next, though if there's still stuff you see wrong with this one I would be happy to work on it.  :y:

The arm animation doesn't look quite right because in a walk cycle the shoulders moves also because of the rotation of the torso.

In this reference image her back is obscured by the shoulder itself as it moves, and then as it moves away (as the torso rotates) more of the back is visible.
