[WIP] (C + C) Pixel Town

on: October 16, 2014, 07:50:05 am
I actually would prefer people's first impression of what's going on in the screenshot.
That way I can work out the problems.

The overall aesthetic is very cohesive and looks nice. There is a gradient over parts of the piece so it will be difficult to provide perfect feedback. A few things I see are that there very close shades of gray in the fence post as well as the nature of the fence itself makes it look like it is floating with the shadow. Changing it to something like this

would help its readability. Other than that the piece looks pretty clean. You could go for some more detail with adding things on the roof like generators and water tanks and whatnot.

 To reply in purity..
Can't tell what's going on specifically but it looks pretty cool.. prohibition era/ 16-bit.
Those blue and reds should be less saturate I think to fit the mood I'm perceiving.
Maybe the background should be almost fully black and white.

That way I can work out the problems.

I see a T-section of a road in a small city or town. It's late in the evening judging by the lantern lights but daytime if I go by the brightness of the roofs and the clear blue reflection of the sky in the windows. There is an old lady with a brown hat walking southwards near a bistro. On the other side stands a shady man with a gray hat and a tommy gun at the entrance of a dirty back alley featuring two stacks of two used car tires each. In the lower left there is a park or garden blocked off by a fence made of dark metal bars. Along the north side of the garden stand two man-sized potted plants and south of the bistro, a welding mask lays on the sidewalk. The only thing which separates the sidewalk from the road is a flat black line painted on the floor. There do not seem to be any curbstones and the lack of manholes suggests the city is having a sanitation problem... ok, sorry, got carried away a bit but that's my first impression.

looks great, but to the casual observer, i'd change the blue windows to an orange to depict light orange light coming from inside to better give off an evening feel (maybe more yellow if you want to depict darker night time.  Though of course, now comes the problem of doing the internal lighting of the building to match the windows, now that we can see the building interiors

the bright red is too much as already said

Still have to work on the street/sidewalk balance. Maybe the people (sprites) need to stand out some more...

first thing i notice is that the roof is way too bright and environment is a bit dull.

I like it!

- removed shadows from pavement to imply height difference
- different direction on how you might show grass
- If you intent to show the insides of buildings, they should be warm and yellow, as the windows looking in. You might make windows and streetlamps light up the street around them.

Still pretty rough edit:
