[C&C/WIP] Female Warrior

on: October 06, 2014, 12:57:06 pm
Hello there again,

I know I am posting too much right now, but I really got into pixel art.
Today I want to show You my third piece of art - experiment with female figure - a warrior of some kind.
It took me about 6 hours to do... still lacking some details, face, some variation.
Please C&C it as much as You can, I am extermely open for criticism.
And two questions:
1) I want to add face, but not exactly manga/anime style... any suggestions?
2) I am working in GraphicsGaleFree. How can I save the picture with the palette of only used colours?

Thank You in advance,
Vorph

This may hurt a little, but it's something You'll get used to.

I suggest "western" comic book style (think marvel or dc). Another options is realism.

I thought I was going to help out on the face, but I couldn't think of anything.
But if you are studying the female figure a straight up and down pose like that isn't going to teach much.
Google search "Dynamic Poses" and just find one that you like and use it as a reference.

zum beispiel: (should be pretty easy to find the reference pic I used. It was like one of the first ones.

I was going for rather shy pose here... in contrast with the big weapon. Still need to work on the face though.
And can You answer my questions and comment on the technique etc.?

If you want a shy pose you need to bring things in closer.
Shyness is a rather defensive posture.

Instead of googling "dynamic pose" Google something like "shy pose" instead. Trust me, you aren't cheating by using a pose ripped from google. (assuming you are using it as a reference only and not just lining over it.)
I have an edit for you, but it'll have to wait till after my college courses have ended.

You might find this useful for the face:(I'm still new at pixel art myself, faces and hands give me the most problems)

Hi there again.
I will be coming back to pixel art, this piece in particural, but I would like some suggestions, before I start again. Specially on face and colouring. Anyone?
This may hurt a little, but it's something You'll get used to.

I haven't edited the pose, but I fixed the shading, did very very little fixes to the arms and hands and also finished the face in four different ways. But the fourth one is the best one I made.

However I noticed that there isn't a lot of contrast, so I upped it a bit:

The lightsource is above her, right?
I like the style, but I can't help but notice that there's something about the arms, like one is longer than the other, maybe it's just an impression.

Thanks a lot for edits, I like them - and they will give me a start on edits. About the arm - it is not longer, it is (right hand on picture, left if You are her:) bent to hold the weapon. Maybe I should shade it so it would be more in the back ... Also I will be working on her magic PIG companion :)
This may hurt a little, but it's something You'll get used to.

Firstly if this is supposed to resemble a game sprite then can I suggest working against a 50% brightness background in either pure grey or more desaturated such as this?

Starting in this way helps you build a good level of contrast and makes the sprite/image stand out against more backgrounds.

Before going much further I think you need to work on the pose and give her more character.
With the way she's standing and the clothes she's wearing there's just nothing about her that says "warrior".
I'd suggest a more dynamic pose with feet apart and knees bent a bit.
And consider an outfit that is more suitable for combat.
Also the way the boots have big rounded toes suggest a kind of chibi style but the rest of the character doesn't fit.
I'd say probably go for more realistic shaped boots unless you want to go all out anime style.

I'm not really digging that weapon design.
Seems like maybe you should start by drawing her holding a plain pole staff until you get the pose nicer, then consider some designs for the weapon that are a bit less awkward for her to hold.

It might be good looking at some references like these.

Face edit.  Warrior clothing idea.

I messed with the anatomy a lot just because I need the practice.  Added a lot more contrast and threw a neutral gray around.
