cubes vs. hairballs - lowres mockup

on: October 04, 2014, 09:48:22 pm
Got a bit stuck with this mockup for a game I've been thinking about lately. New eyes would be greatly appreciated, I'm feeling a bit stuck in terms of direction. Somewhat inspired from Buch, Surt and winged doom =).

Digging the colors. I think what I'd do is try to get rid of the dithering as it seems to create textures which do not fit well with the clean/sharp style of everything else.

Hey thanks!

I don't know about the dither textures, I kinda like the rugged / clean contrast. Also, what to put in all the empty floorspace? Gotta work on that some more.

Maybe the same as now, just except with dithering, use an extra/faded tone to create the same details. Some sparse dithering might work on the furry creatures to emphasize the furryness.

i think the dithering looks great and is used in the right amount too, imo

quick no-dither test edit side by side comparison (I think this looks much cleaner and has way better readability than the dithered version but it's of course your decision what to do):

Nice edit, I didn't really get what you meant before, but now I see.

Tried incorporating color saturation and remove some dithers. I do want to keep some! Also tried redoing tiles I didn't like, and add more sprites.

Looks better now. Is there a story to it or is it random tech-internals and creatures?

Well... no. I guess the story would be about travelling around with a group of cubes and surviving levels. Probably some interaction with the pink screens could open doors or give you new team members. Something like that.

I have been looking a lot at circuit boards lately: http://negsparetime.blogspot.se/
