Help with RPG Sprite animation

on: September 23, 2014, 03:22:23 am
Hi! I'm still fairly new to pixel art, and extremely new to animation. I've been trying to emulate this style of sprite: http://fayforest.sakura.ne.jp/nicky.cgi?DATE=201205?MODE=MONTH

So far I have this for a front facing sprite:

What I'm really frustrated with right now is the side view:

It seems like every time I try to fix something about it, it just ends up looking worse. .-.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Front view: she's shuffling her feet, not really walking.

Side view: there is something weird with the legs but we can't see what because of the skirt. Make a naked version first. Also these legs and feet are pretty big / thick.

Do you know this tuto?

Not a bad start at all. I think what's giving the impression of shuffling rather than walking is the stiffness of the feet. Try to give the feet a bit more bend on contact, perhaps. The timing of the head movement might be a little off, but I'm not sure. A little squash and stretch and some movement on the skirt would give it a better sense of solidity as well.

Ok, I did some studying, and I've come up with this for the front walk:

It's nice but the feet look like they slide forward on the upstep. In frame 3/7 the furthest leg is nice, but frames 4/8 and 1/5 the foot should lift and appear higher than the planted foot. On frame 4/8, kill the highlight on the leg under the knee. Frame 1/5's "standing" pose's feet/legs would benefit from being asymmetrical.
The arms are well executed I think  :)  Cute style!

Much better!
The feet don't move realistically though, it looks like you're reusing frames, just adding the shadow.
Feet do stay in contact with the ground on their (apparent) backward move, but they're raised during all the forward thrust. You can't avoid drawing that.
(basically what michelcote was saying, I guess)

I was trying to incorporate the "standing" pose into the walk, but yeah, it looks too unnatural. I'll keep working on it. Thanks for the advice so far!  :)

Don't forget the perspective. You're not seeing the character from the front, you're seeing them from above.
