They look rather flat and could use better contrasting colors.

Make sharper differences between the colors.

@yaomon17 sound advice but not the best example I'm afraid   :blind:

@OP reduce some of the superfluous colours, and light it from one side to emphasize the edge works well, also bring the handle width in, and maybe extend the handle a little bit.

I don't think the lamp post or chest work very well, the lamp is just too big and the details don't harmonize design wise, so it's more design than it is pixel technique.

the chest, you'd be better to reduce the colours a lot, and to seperate the lid from the base, here's an example

the cactus however works really well in terms of detail and readability,
I'd suggest focusing on the lower resolution pieces, with more of a game art focus :)

It's a bit better because there is a first hint of a light source on the blade (shadow), but it's inconsistent with the hilt, and mostly it lacks the bright highlights (speculars) that translate as 'shiny deadly metal', as in yaomon's and Grimsane's examples.

Also you shouldn't work on a white bg, except if that's how the sprites would be used ingame. Use a medium neutral gray as a temporary working bg.

Here's some reading for you ;)

Hey guys, i realised that the hilt looked pretty odd so i quickly fixed that up as well as adding shading to the blade and defining where the light source exactly is, however. I had trouble making he blade look more deadly? I dont know wether its the colors im using or if its just that im not too experienced. Any other areas in need of improvement?
