RPG based on street gangs

on: April 27, 2014, 07:57:24 am
I am working on an iOS game based on street gangs.  I don't know if this is considered pixel art anymore (when I started out, it was more pixely), but in any case I would like some advice on what I can do to make it look better, or any ideas that would make the game look awesome.

The setting doesn't look believable. The housing style makes me think of a massive metropolitan area like the Bronx, but the empty lots and the housing style for the liquor store makes me think of a quieter place, and the fences makes me think of an industrial area in an eerily quiet setting. The scale is also off so our characters are taller than the doors.

Metropolitan areas like the Bronx will generally build taller buildings, as land is more expensive and people build taller buildings to make more floor space with the same piece of land.  Less bustling places will build shorter buildings, use more land space, and have more wide-open spaces.

If you know neighborhoods that are known for its gangs, use google street and see what dangerous settings look like. If we throw in a bunch of stereotypes, it will come off as shallow, maybe even offensive.

Might also be wise to replace the green marble texture with grass... not gonna question where you got it from...  :ouch:

This isn't pixel art.
If you're going for a mixed style like this try posting it in one of the other forums we have here that covers digital painting and such.
Otherwise paint over this with a limited palette, disable anti-aliasing and don't use airbrush, don't paste in textures from photos etc etc.
