Hello again, and help + C&C

on: April 16, 2014, 11:45:41 pm
Hello, first I'd like to thank everyone that gave me help with that dragon I was working on. I wanted to let you all know that I did read through and follow your advice as best as I was able.
I used that dragon to really test the upper limits of my abilities. That project has been put on the back-burner as I try to get the basics. Which brings me to my latest project. Overall i'm happy with it, I used it as a bit of an anatomy study as well as a light source study.
But I realized I don't know of any good techniques to imply facial detail on a sprite this small. Note that the current face was just something drawn out of frustration.

Faces are pretty hard to draw at this scale, and there's no one "right" way to do it. The important thing to remember is that you can't draw every single detail - there's just not enough space. You have to hint at things instead of drawing them outright.

Here's an edit I did with some ideas. If all else fails, just try moving pixels around until something looks good. Have fun with it!  :)

Gah, I have a long way to go. I love what you did the legs and particularly the feet and shoes.

My update trying hard not to copy to hard off of you! haha

Its pretty obvious you're still using a straight ramp on the legs as opposed to the Amorphous' edit.
And a quick check in colour picker confirms this (both Hue 30)

It helps to load some good pixel art and watch what happens with the numbers for Hue Saturation and Brightness (all are important).

Try pointing her right foot (our left) a bit more towards the viewer.
Also looks like a bit too much perspective on the feet (far foot a bit too high).

I'm sorry, I don't know what the term "straight ramp" means.
Can you give me an explanation?

I would recommend the following thread for info on palettes and colour ramps http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11299 (Section 5)

Ah color. I should mention, that while I am not color blind I do suffer from mild color deficiency. Not sure which colors though, color vision tests are inconclusive.

Lol, I like it RanMaster!

Oh right I suppose it makes it a bit difficult but I suppose you can always ask someone how the colours look or to help with the palette.
Straight ramp meaning the Hue is the same for light and dark.
Your skin tone uses a straight ramp as opposed to the red-orange for example.
Open colour picker and click through different ramps with eye dropper and you will see the Hue (H) shifting.
A common example of this is some greenery would be warm yellow in the sunlight, cooler green through to dark blue (and low saturation is good at that point).

Cute edit Ran  :y:

I remember that there was a pre-built and recommended palette on this site somewhere. Can't for the life of my find it again though.
