Game sprites [WIP][ C+C]

on: April 15, 2014, 03:16:56 am
Hello!
I'm doing the art for an educational game ~
I want to keep it really simple since i'll be animating other ~8 breeds, and because i'm new to pixel art.
This is the bull terrier, its the one i've worked the most on so far:

These are the old ones and the other dogs:

I'll be posting their acessories and other sprites from the game for critics/tips too.

hi welcome to the forum.
cure puppies  :y:

quick edit:

main points here:
  • smooth out those hard 45 degree lines u have with anti-aliasing.
  • remove very similar colours.
  • imply some form with the lighting rather than the cardboard cut-out style highlighting you're using.
  • use selective outlining (selout) to make the outline in the brighter areas less obvious and contrasty.

Hello!
Thank you for the reply and help!
Sorry for taking so long to reply.
I really loved your edit!
 you really improved it, however i don't think it will suit with the background, because I think that the shadow you used would imply quite a strong light so i did some really, light shadows based on yours. But I may be wrong!  :blind:
Quite bad of my part to not specify it, also.  :-X

out of your suggestions and example, i did:

- smooth the hard 45 degree lines with AA;
- removed very similar colours;
- removed outline from the paws.

the ones I didnt (highlighting, selout) were because:

- removed all highlighting, i think i won't use it in them;
- I think that selout may be a problem for animating them, will make it more difficult, but I've made the outline lighter.

 I still consider both an option but will leave to decide a bit later.  ;D

I will only work with these three in here  to no post eaaaaaaaaaaach dog.

From now on I'll work on the grass tiles and BG elements, will update as soon as I improve what I already have.

The labrador at the bottom is the old one, not sure why i posted it.. may be useful or something  (?)

Sorry, I''ll make shorter and clearer posts from now on.
Ill focus on these three dogs for now, would like to know if theres something i can still improve in them.
The tiles i referred to are these:

(its a sketch, but plan to use some irregular height)
the game is a runner seen from the side.
