Hydra favicon

on: February 26, 2014, 12:44:24 pm
Hello! I am trying to make a cool favicon based on the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lernaean_Hydra which is a green monster with several heads.
It looks pretty boring and flat right now, and I am wondering if you have any suggestions on how to improve it?

http://hydra.org/favicon.ico

Since it is a favicon, it is 16px * 16 px.

Hi, talin

I was playing around with the icon and I realized that getting depth in a 16 by 16 space is incredibly hard.  So I think maybe going in a different direction may be the solution. Icon’s should be well “iconic” just a little thing that’s easily recognizable and symbolizes something larger.

So I dug a little bit through google images for hydra related things and found these old pots. There are a lot like them and have bright colors and great silhouettes.  Kind of reminds me of the old Disney movie with the pictures of his deeds on pots.

So with that said, here’s an rough edit

I realize this is probably not the direction you were thinking of, but hopefully I was helpful.

Hello Daikon!

Your idea is different from what I initially had in mind,  but it is certainly interesting.
I agree that it is very difficult to work with such a low resolution... I like the orange colors,
even though my website is mostly green.

I will explore this option as well. Thank you!

Did a quick edit. Your version currently reads as a plant to me. I can't read anything out of the body. It's important to have a clear silhouette when working at this size( actually just flat colors dark green and red eyes would probably be the best for my version). The blue eyes blend with the green and I can't make them out at 1x. Red eyes stand out and makes us think monster! Same with the gaping mouth! I tried adding more clear legs and tail.

Cool! Hmm, those look great on black, but they look rather strange on a transparent background.

I imported them at www.favicon.cc and marked the black parts as transparent (you can see a preview of it in the
tab for that page in your browser).

It's because both of opted to AA to black, if you go with solid fields of colors/AA to white they won't look strange. Is it necessary for the favicon to be transparent? A background color might make it pop more
