@ppd: thanks! that little chicki is what my soul looks like when i go out for grub. I like the rough step... do you find that animating with a softer approach like that helps?

could only work on it a little today.

Not actual value studies per se -- these are just from imagination. Getting towards that though.

If you insist on being pessimistic about your own abilities, consider also being pessimistic about the accuracy of that pessimistic judgement.

WIP - Pixel Witch
Super new to pixel art. I tried like twice in 2014 and didn't touch the stuff since then. Haven't done a coloured piece before.
Giving it a go again, inspired by the syosa's pixels. Still pretty bad at picking my own palettes though.
Started up as a pick me up, since I was feeling super down today.

Elm: That's a lot of pixels. Like, 9 times the number of pixels found in Syosa's work (example: A writer and a Dragon : 201x225 pixels = 45,225 px, vs yours 500x800 = 400,000 px.).  If you want to take an oekaki-style approach, no problem, but if you're aiming to work on pixel technique specifically , I strongly recommend reducing the number of pixels you'll need to work over. Right now, it's more like an illustration (nice hair, btw)

Regarding picking your own palette: I'd suggest looking into MyPaint. Its HCY color selector is much more intuitive than your average HSL/HSV/RGB selector, and it also includes gamut masking, which is a really nice way of simplifying the problem of creating a unified palette.
If you insist on being pessimistic about your own abilities, consider also being pessimistic about the accuracy of that pessimistic judgement.
