So rusty.. I feel like I haven't penciled in forever :_(

I warmed up with some really crappy gesture scribbles and  realized how weak they were; but I told myself I would practice just a little bit more often from now (I don't wanna post those; but maybe soon I'll warm up a bit and feel cozy enough sharing some). Ideally I will practice daily, even if just for 20-30 minutes.

 mostly playing with color:

an unfinished pixel sketch

edit: hhmmm, probably should have posted in pixel art's section.. didn't think I'd keep going, but I liked the palette. It was initially made for the weekly challenge at pJ but I didn't want to enter. I just like making portraits sometimes; it's fun to me.
Now I have to head off to work:

Well, heres me playing with color taking critique that "I don't push contrasts hard enough" and respond to it to its logical extreme and find that... over the top contrasts isn't all that bad, and dark, low contrasting colors are necessary for lowly-lit settings.

Some tiles from this week:

A few are finished, most are not (eg. that 'polearm' icon next to the spear icon. Yes, that's a question mark on the end.)

I have to be careful with color here as I'm considering a mono-colored thing to indicate 'white/red/pink/blue/etc X' rather than just plain 'X'. So most icons are rendered in greys.

Unicode fonts, with a character map application, are a great design resource. The vehicle icons are adapted from the Vehicles/Traffic section of Unicode (starts at U+1F680 "ROCKET" and continues until about U+1F6B8), dunno what font.

Pix3m: Very oil-paint-y. Have you tried working with restricted colorspaces (CPC, EGA64, Genesis, Amiga)? The smaller ones are especially good at making you deal with the necessity of high contrast.

If you insist on being pessimistic about your own abilities, consider also being pessimistic about the accuracy of that pessimistic judgement.
