to avoid taking the thread off-topic gonna post some study sketches:

@Ymedron: Hope you were using selection masks they are awesome in this regard, dunno how much you know so i'll elaborate anyway; selections in edit mode, are masks when selection masking is enabled in weight paint mode, then Ctrl+K will fill the selection with weight strength set to in the left panel (100% in this case) normalize will make sure that you don't have verts allocated to multiple bones.

skulls out of imagination, ribcage out of imagination, pelvis out of imagination, pelvis real life study (actually hard to get pelvis pictures not from a cardinal viewing direction)

and skulls from life-drawing and then more skulls out of imagination (i1, i2) with some more applied details.

I am a beginner at drawing. I am starting with gestures. Here are some 45 second gestures(shucks I couldn't complete any of them):

Have you considered working from a 3D model? (e.g.: http://www.kineman.com/ )

Suggestions: Use a softer pencil for those (5B) and do them on plain paper if you have any. Then, try to not copy contour but rather look for the long rhythms and limit yourself to 4 to 5 confident strokes per gesture (that's almost 10 seconds per stroke which should be enough). Then of course the most important thing, keep drawing. Do not stop after just a handful of gestures. Also check http://www.proko.com, he explains gesture drawing quite well even in the free versions of his videos.

Relax. :) Toons need love. Well yeah, I am struggling with them too. Funny thing is, back in school they came easy to me when I scribbled them in my books (even without construction) and nowadays I struggle with construction but that's in everything not just toons... maybe toons do not like being carefully constructed too much?

I dislike 3D models for live referencing purposes, since well... it's just a model. Maybe great to look at how the joints are actually working. For measuring out things and getting reference experience values I prefer real-life objects (photographs)

Well... and since I don't trust my anatomical drawing books, I just used my medical book for actually measuring out some jaw/teeth proportions which should help with the next round imagination drawing.
