So I did this picture for Paddy, theme being Birds+Shadow creatures, I thought it was quite good and I put quite a bit of work into it, but I've got absolutely no feedback on it so far so I am a bit worried since artists tend to be blind to their own mistakes.

Are there any grave mistakes? What can I improve? Is it too boring maybe?

It feels to me that the eye wants to be the focal point, but there isn't enough to make it obvious that that is the focal point.

Good piece!

First: I absolutely love it. Should be obvious ;D Two things, however: I think the feathers could be darker. It's quite light for a crow. Also, I really like the two colors on the crow (blue and red/magenta), but I believe the background colors clash a bit with these two.

@Crow: Ah, good catch with the colors, I tried to make the whole picture darker first but that didn't work out, but just making the feathers darker works very well and actually helps separating it from the background.

if you're thinking of recoloring
i think the best colors for the crow would be some tones that would work better with the lights from sides
i made a quick recolor..

sorry for messing with a lot of things on the pic - was just playing around   :P

Ah yeah, I've been waay to conservative again. Those colors are great, mind telling me what you did to get them?

most of them are just edits of your colors, like the darkest shade on the bird was green for you but I moved it to blue..
you can tell there's not too much difference in a lot of the colors, like the red shades I just gave them a tint of blue

my first color choices were a little too dark then I made it lighter in Gimp,

I think blue was the better choice to go for the Crow since it works with teal and pink light sources :- )

This is more of an analysis of your tendencies in general rather than specific to this piece, but:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/30179243/Pixelart/mr_beast.PNG

You have a tendency to use 45 degree diagonal lines and a triangular composition in almost all of your original (read: not intended to be a perfect copy of some reference or other) pieces, to the point where it's immediately obvious that a piece is yours just based on whether it matches those criteria. Most importantly, in almost every piece you've got this... sweeping trend from bottom-left to upper-right corner. It's getting a bit repetitive, and I feel like you're sort of stuck in a compositional rut where this diagonal-triangle composition is the only one you're really comfortable with doing.

There are some exceptions in your latest works- Minion of the Eye and Darkness Injection noticeably avoid this diagonal-trend of yours. Still, I'd advise you to try to avoid this comfort-zone of yours; all these 45-degree angles add up into diagonal 90-degree angles which are incredibly obvious, uningenuous, and distinctly artificial and non-organic (diagonal 90-degree angles are even rarer in nature than just normal 90 degree angles, which at least show up when trees intersect with horizon-lines and whatnot).

I don't know if you were aware of this trend of yours, but hopefully this explanation has helped either way.

No I wasn't aware of that. :-\

I will keep that in mind the next time I plan out a piece.
