GR#160 - Metroidvania Char - Sprite Process

on: October 19, 2013, 03:43:31 am

I'm starting to help overhaul the art on a Metroidvania project and my first task was the player character, pretty simple stuff I guess. The palette is still super tentative but people and animals have always been my weak point, so I could use some help with the anatomy errors I can't recognize and all that business. The only thing I'm really happy with is the left (character's right) leg

Quick edit to show how I'd change some things.

I'm not amazing with anatomy on small characters, but it seems like it's almost a crouching position. I've played a lot of the 2D metroid games, and your sprite looks remarkably like that (which sounds like what you're going for). However, I never liked how samus always looked like she was an umpire or was doing squats.

I tried to make him lean forward a bit more, and straightened his legs. and clean up some of the other things for clarity. It's really rough, but hopefully you get what I was going for.

Also, it seemed like his arms were a bit too long considering how small his body is.

EDIT:

edit to fix stubby legs and balance.
Love the greebles and detail, however. Sorry I killed those with my edit  :(

Proportions seem ok for this size, I think you should keep the bulky armor look you have going. Edit:

All aboard the edit train, choo chooooo!

I have no idea what's going on with head. Is that hair with a headband or some kind of helmet thing?

I would add at least one color to accent the blue and break up the monotony.

To my liking, initial version is superior.

I agree with Sohei/Wolfenoctis in terms of bulkiness. Also, here's a thought on how you might break up color monotony a little:

You can probably come up with a better color combination if you mess around a bit.

Good sprite, I like it a lot :)

Sorry for not replying ever, over the last few months we've gone through a long redesign process and ended up with something super different.

The final armor concept (made by someone other than me, the design is pretty much out of my hands outside of suggestions)-

The actual sprite-

And how it got there-

The backstory of the character involves being unwillingly cyborgified, which should explain the transition up to the sixth, and then it was changed from being rough and badly done to something a little more battle ready for the last two. The head is also a placeholder at this point until we get those concepts in.
