Need help to animate character

on: August 21, 2013, 01:58:04 pm
Hello

I worked recently on my hero sprite and i'd like to have some critics about arm movment
there are 3 positions for head and hammer (1 hammer position need to be polished)

I try to make the shoulder move to front and after  back
I suppose i should move some pixel from the steambag to simulate the light in a piece of steel in movment.

The point bother me is about the light and shadow for the cap : i don't really have clue to start and if the cap should "jump" in the head
I don't know if i should make the face move right and left so we'll see a 3/4 face sometime

Ps: you should see boots from 1st frame are differents : i just start to make boots less complex with same colors as the hero

This run cycle will be use as normal move for the hero : he can run or stop (no walking cycle in game)

Many thanks by advance

nice character, but I guess it is going to take you a lot of time to animate since the guy is holding a lot of stuff.

question : is he holding the hammer vertically or horizontally ?

Thanks hsn2555 ^^
It's not a problem to take time for this game ^^

He's suppose to take hammer verticaly to move and use it like war hammer to hit/smash the foes in current position
- you can reverse the weapon to fire like a gatling or beam cannon

This is pretty rough:

I'm have other stuff to do at the moment so no time for extensive text or diagrams.
Here's some thoughts:

- Cut the arm/hammer bounce occurrence in half.
With some tweaking it can be made to look like a sway instead of a bounce.
It makes it appear as he is running with the objects weight the same way he'd be using his arms if he were to be holding nothing.

- Don't be afraid to hack him up and make a mess.
Focus on space and motion and do cleanup on later passes.
If you are using layers it will help you do this more cleanly instead of chopping it up like I did.

- The spacing was very even for most parts.
Weight the spacing to the ends, or another choice, to create more visual interest.

I didn't change a lot of stuff like the steam, machine, hair, hat, etc.
But they could use some work as well.
I can type some more stuff later if you remind me.

Thanks a lot for the edit !

so you added 2 frames 10 -> 12 frames : is it something vital for the animation? it's true i'll have lot of animations with 4 frames (shoot, jump), but i thought it won't be a problem.

the movement is more like little jump now : i can't say if it's better but the running cycle seams more dynamic this way, like a soldat running with his package ^^

Both walks and runs have up and down movement.

When walking both feet will contact the ground before the back foot lifts to move forward.
At least 1 foot is always on the ground.
Dude walking - 1:12

When running there is a moment when both feet are off the ground.
This is where the little jump comes in.
Unlike a walk this is the highest point of the cycle.
Dude running - 5:30

When running really fast the up and down motion is reduced.
Dude running crazy fast.

Youtube time links have been acting weird lately so if the links don't skip ahead then you'll have to go to the time manually.

I added 1 frame each step when he leaves the ground to give him more time in the air and to weight the space of his feet.

Yours:

Mine:

The extra frame lets him move up one more time.
And the feet move only slightly from frame 2 to 3.
This slows down the foot and lets it move more quickly as it crosses over to the front, adding more variation to the motion.
