[wip] Gameboy stuff, c&c is appreciated.

on: April 28, 2013, 03:45:07 pm
Hello!
I'm trying my best with 4color stuff to improve my pixel-technique and thought that the most fun way is to immitate some GB graphics.
So I'm doing some GB-graphics every now and then.
I will crosspost them here and on pixeljoint to get critique and opinions.

I plan to update this header every now and then with new and updated stuff.

As first six portrait variations I did with a mirror:
(old)

I intend to use the middle bottom as avatar here, on pixeljoints forum and their gallerie and want to make sure I haven't done any mayor mistakes.
(current)

Here are some 16x16 tiles done throughout the year. I had to sort them somewhat, otherwise I would have posted them sooner.

And to view them in some context a few mockups:

Note that I have made some edits and extras in the mockups which I haven't make in the tiles, yet (the shadow from the font, two sprites and the portrait).

Some of the stuff I learned from or used as reference:

I used the Game Boy Turns 20 challenge palette plus transparenecy.

Also I can't say how active I will be, so sorry in advance if it takes me some time before I read your comment and/or critique.

I've made a new mockup with these tiles to compete in this competition.

Also the pixeljoint link is here.
I'm not very happy with the titlescreen.
Also I tried my hand at some sprites

and to do something like a swordslash

and a little interface with portrait

I'm currently struggling with stairs, how to make them interesting and how to make them work on cliffs.

problem is that the front and back stairs on the cliff is uninteresting and that the side stairs doesn't work with anything higher that a 1 tile high cliff.
I could add some shadows to the front and back stairs, but then I would have the same problem as with the sidestairs.

Would be dope to get suggestions and examples to this problem plus of course any c&c to everything posted.

This is some nice stuff, Very classic! Especially digging the portrait. If you are going for GB restrictions, you should note that sprites can only utilize 3 colors ( with one for transparency). right now yours would essentially be using 5 as you are including all the available shades + assuming transparency.

Also, since you're doing GB stuff you should take a look at the commercial critique thread! We're analyzing pokemon, and whether you participate or not there might be some posts you find useful involving the world of 4 colors :]

@hawken
I know. I remember thinking about it but decided to shorten it the way I did. Sadly I can't remember my reasoning so I assume that it wasn't reasonable at all  :lol:. I'm not statisfied with the hole title-screen, so I'm going to fix it anyways when I hopefully have more time.

@Ryumaru
Thank you! Right now I'm just messing with the palette. Sprites are momentary my biggest problem to get right (imho), but I'm going to try it!
I took a look at the commercial critique thread and it's accompanied challenge, it sure looks interesting and I will fallow their course.

I hope it doesn't take me to long to post new stuff, but I'm currently moving so I can't promise anything.
