Tree [WIP]

on: May 23, 2013, 02:16:57 pm
Hi guys, my first post here, I've been lurking these forums for a while now and decided to join and ask for advice to help me improve my pixel art. This is a tree I've been working on:

Thank you.

I don't really see a problem here.

It is a little strange that the trunk of the tree isn't shaded despite being in a shadow.

Try to shade the tree as a whole rather then each individual cluster of leaves. Besides that it looks very nice.  :)

As farenheit said, defining an overall shape by high-level shading would help.

A quick edit for you: I introduced an "overlay" layer in gimp, and painted the volume with darkest green. Here's the result.

By the way, your "leaves chunk" look very much like pillow-shaded chunks rather than chunks facing a lightsource and casted shadow, imho.

Wow that looks A LOT better to me, personally! The tree is starting to come together as a whole now! :)

I feel as if to me, the rows of leaves are a little too 'clean' and 'neat' to be a real tree. (IE: They are falling too perfectly in rows.) However; if that is the game's style (which it could very well be) than a style is a style!

Ok, I tried to make the leaves a little more defined and the rows less obvious...

It's looking very good now! The only thing I see is that your tree looks like a conifer but has leaves and not pines.    Anyways good job.

Imho, your first trunk with 3 shades was superior to the current one. You clearly did progress, and the "detailed leaves" bring just the right amount of detail. Yet, you imho took the "row less obvious" a little too far. It works well on the rightmost part of the tree, but on the leftmost one, you went with very irregular volumes, and somehow broke the perspective... That's a bit the Dr. Jektree and Mr. Hyde, this time.

quick edit with copy-pasting of vertical slices ...
