[C + C] bows

on: May 18, 2013, 05:06:14 am
I'm relatively new to pixel art and I desperately need some constructive criticisms. I've tried to draw some pixel art but I always feel something is off it. The same goes with my attempts on drawing a simple bow. Please tell me what's wrong with it and how I can improve.

First attempt 128x128

Second attempt 64x64

Try to make your bow look more natural, if you look at other old fashion bow they curve down more and don't curve up as much. I tried my hand at it, just something quick:

Good luck!  :y:

It's a boring bow, even if it is meant to be a simple bow. There are more interesting shapes bows can come in, even if we are dealing with a functional, realistic one.

The original is really flat due to pillow-shading.
The edit added a ton of banding.

You need to work on the 3D feel if you want it to look interesting.
As Pix3M, it's a pretty boring and simple design.

This is my attempts at fixing pillow-shading (after I googled it). Frankly, I don't pay much attention to the design right now, I'd really much like to get the placement of pixels right first. Nonetheless, I tried to make it more interesting for you.

You should focus on design first and then placement of pixels..

Right now you have a curved line with some shading.
And it looks quite blurred because you're using many colors in close proximity with low contrast.

You should look at some examples, a quick search for bow on pixeljoint.

http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/40564.htm#

I assume you went for a realistic approach and not cartoony or oversized.
But it's just a thin piece of curved wood, you're not really going to learn much drawing that at this resolution or "getting the optimal pixel placement".
And there's not much to comment on.

Edit: I made an attempt at an edit.

Ok, so this is my less boring, high contrast and hopefully no pillow-shading design. I mimicked your string's shading, hope you don't mind.

I'm still trying to figure out which style to approach but I can't seem to try cartoony style by myself. It'd be nice if you could link some tutorials or point me to the right direction.
