"Cincy's" - C+C wanted, WIP

on: April 10, 2013, 04:33:57 am
I'm relatively new to pixel art, as I just got into it because I'm making a game that will use pixel art. I created this, and I think its OK, but it seems like something is missing or its just not quite right. The theme is supposed to be noir-style, very dark, almost dreary.

Do you have a version of the image that isn't .jpg? .jpgs are really blurry. You might want to go with .png or .gif for uploading pixel art.

Pretty much nothing in that image is pixelart. It's mostly gradients, semi-transparencies, auto-noise, 24bit-elements etc. On top of that you have mixed resolutions. If you're making a game it can be ok to do some post-processing or adding in-game effects, but if you want help in a pixelart-forum you need to present the clean material.

Yes, I posted this on another forum before this (it recieved little response) and someone just told me about gradients and AA and how to use it / if at all. I will fix it and post something later. I did use one resolution throughout the whole piece though.

have a look at this map from the snes batman game.  I think it could be a good reference for you

Ok, so I've revised it a bit, and I feel it looks a whole lot better. I added a fence as a middle ground element to kill off the dead space that was there. I also fixed lighting and made everything darker with some highlights.

I made another iteration, this time fixing some lighting and also the sign which was rendering oddly. I also began to start a night cloud, but I'm unsure of it, I want it to feel darker, like a rain cloud. Eventually I want to add a rain overlay.

Does this look better than version 1?

imo, this version it's darker and not really better than the previous.
Try to add light effect on Gyncy's and the lamp :)
