Hey guys,

I am currently working on an rpg game named Sovereign by Friggin' Games. Well I am supposed to make a huge tree and I did make one but I am not satisfied with it nor it looks lovely.

It's supposed to be a tree for the forest and hence should be a lil dark and look real.

Currently Working on:

Current Version:

Updated Version:

Help me make it lovelier and a lil scarier :)

Thanking in advance.

Hi there

Just a reminder to begin with, I don't know how long you've been on the forums but there are plenty of good tutorials and treemaking threads which serve as really good reference pictures.

One of them is http://www.wayofthepixel.net/index.php?topic=10520.msg112358#msg112358

I don't know how realistic you want this to be but the first thing I react on is the squareness of the foliage. The second I notice is the perspective. There are also no outlines on the foliage but there are outlines on the trunk, I would suggest go either with or without. As I mentioned there are plenty of ways to go about when drawing a tree. I usually go outside and pick a tree which I feel like would serve my purpose and style, then I alter as I go to fit perfectly. Your tree looks most like an oak, so I would go get a reference picture of an oak and go from there.

Then I get a wider brush and get a good shape going. I point out the light source and get some lumps of leaves, then you can refine everything as you go.

Here are two unfinished trees I was working on a while ago:

Hope they can be of any help!

(Also wanted to add that most roots doesn't show that much above earth, if they do they usually grow on mountains or places where they need to search for other places to get a grip)

Hey again!

That's a big improvement!
The foliage looks really good and lush and the shape is nice.

The only thing I would change is the trunk again

made this to show you what I mean, also added another stack of leaves in the bottom.

good improvement.  Though the foliage still looks flat.  This is because you shade it the same all the way around.  Make the leaf tufts at the top lighter, and the ones are the bottom darker, though the bottom ones will still catch little bits of light.  The way all the leaf tufts are the about the same size is a little wierd.  Quick edit:

Hey r1k, thanks for reply but whatever you said was a bit complicated for me so I took help of a friend and learnt how to make good trees yet I can't lol. So, I've just added some stuff on the tree I've posted on forums and here it is:

Suddenly the owners wanted to change the style of the game so the character looks chibi now and will probably use cell shading most of the time.

Here's the walk animation of the main  character:

I am not satisfied but dunno how to make it great.

What r1k's saying is that there are two levels of forms to a tree-

-The tufts of leaves themselves (several small spheres...)

-And all the tufts together (...coming together to form one large, bumpy sphere)

The tufts are shaded well, so they look 3D, but the larger sphere they create is flat since each tuft looks the same.
