Just a Tree (WIP)

on: January 06, 2013, 03:21:54 pm
Hello all.
Well i consider myself a beginner at pixel art so using some references, i decided to start working on a tree, i wish to get some feedback before i continue with refining and polishing.

Here it is.

There's a lot that can be improved, but before we get to that, could you possibly upload a non-JPEG version of this?  That is, a version of this that you had before you saved it as a JPEG?  PNG would be fine.

I would mainly suggest working on your colors. Study up on color theory and learn to use better saturated and contrasted colors.

1. Try to chose some less saturated colors or at least play around with the hues to give the shadows and highlights more depth and make it seem less mundane and cartoonish.

2. Mess a bit with the form of the tree. Work on more dramatic and clear lighting.

3. Add more stuff to give it life and make it more interesting (too lazy to really do anything sorry)

To me it's a very good base for further detailing.
Don't forget to cast a shadow from the leaves on the trunk.

Also, keep in mind that in reality, the trunk is usually 10%
as large as the whole tree. I often see people drawing
huge trunks and small leaves, copying some old RPG.

It depends if you want stylized vs realistic. It looks good to me as it is.
Don't forget the shadow of the leaves on the trunk.
