my bomberman WIP (first timer)

on: September 20, 2012, 12:53:28 pm
Hi, I'm new to spriting/pixel art and this is my first attempt at making a bomber man like game.
The sprites are made from scratch under GIMP, after reading various tuts.

The main tiles are not finished, lots more tiles will be done I hope.

a sample screen (x2 actually)

Two first animations :

a bomb going to explode (pixel-corrected from 3D animation on blender)

the main character walking (front only, others will follow, as well as monsters )

any comments / criticisms ?

The perspective of the body and head seems quite uneven.
The head looks like it's at a slight angle, while the body looks like it's being viewed from the front.
You need to angle the body downwards so the perspective looks more believable.

Also, don't forget the side view on those blocks, unless you're going for a complete top-down perspective, in that case only the top of the head of the character should be visible.

The bomb has lighting which reveals the normals of the surface.
The structure of the character is very front view, but he also lacks surface distinction like the bomb, which would help a lot.
You can add angle to the perspective on the character by implying stronger changes in surface normal = more surface contrast = lighting.

Also try re-using your colors more in different balances.

You can use 3D to help you correct the perspective on the blocks and the character as well.

Hi, thanks for your comments !

Perspective was way off indeed (although if you  look at first bombermans, it looks also completely distorded !
See here, by example : http://www.retrotaku.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Super-Bomberman.jpg

So I updated the perspective and head (didnt redo the animation though)
The bomb was also oversaturated, so i reused colors from the other tiles and simplified more the 3D look
The blocks have been reshaped and fit more I think.

hope I didn't ruin it.

pixelpiledriver, that's impressive ! your character looks much better then mine, but I'd like to keep the style of my rounded head, you're right about the colors.

also, didn't see the zooming thing, so I'll post as 1:1

It'd really nice how you get comments that you cannot unsee, it's really straightforward ... once you've seen it !

Try keeping it simple and symmetric.
I'm not sure what is going on with the dirt tile, it looks very random.
Start by just using two or three shades. Also I think you're smoothing out your reflections too much. Try using just two tones and keep it simple.
The bomberman sprite is a bit asymmetric. You should also try to use large shapes, like the eyes, buckle, etc. Just a single pixel is too small and thin.
