[WIP] RPG Tileset

on: August 19, 2012, 04:02:48 pm
Hi guys,

I'm not much of a pixel artist but ive been struggling my way through creating this:

Any critique you can give me? Especially on colour choice and texturing.. which i suppose is everything.

Give yourself more credit! I think you have a great start. The colors could have a bit more contrast imo.It kinda has a ff6 feel to it. Good luck, keep going and keep up the good work.
<Xion> I can't see it why can't I see it

Regarding texturing, the rocks are well made but not sufficient to break the repetitive pattern of the grass: try different arrangements of foliage, for example adapting the finer-grained tiles seen around the road in the bottom right of the example (which don't have a good transition to the main grass type).

Update:

I've tried to increase the contrast of some of the ramps and I've added canopy foliage. I know the foliage is significantly warmer than the grass but i think the colours harmonise fairly well.

As for hiding the grid in the grass I'm hoping it will be less apparent once i have more stuff going on but I'll see if i can do some variations to make it less gridlike.

The texture is pretty nice on the trees, but I had a hard time figuring out what they were. This is an isometric game, looks like--consider the angle of your cliff--but the trees look like they're viewed from straight up.

The perspective is a little odd, yea but i've seen orthographic perspective mixed with straight down foliage before.

However, I might have a go at doing the tree trunks for them but it terrifies me :D

update:

New grass trying to hide the grid (ignore the tiles at the top and left, not done yet)

I don't remember ever seeing that, and it's not working here for me either. = \
I had no idea what your trees were! I read them as pits of slime, because they're so dark compared to the grass around them, and because there are no trunks.
I like the rest of your tiles, though. Reminds me a lot of the old Enix stuff, which has a very warm place in my heart. =)
The whole set is very coherent, too; it all looks like it really belongs together, which is great.
Keep up the good work!

Star Ocean is like that: (see the perspective of the ship and the top down foliage)

But really i suppose i should be going for something similar to the foliage in FF5

But I'm terrified of pixelling the trunk since my pixel art is actually pretty terrible :D

Well you can't get better if you don't try right  ;D
I think all your colors could use to be a tad bit lighter, or maybe just need some more contrasting highlights. (exept those light stone paths, their probably fine)
maybe you shouldn't listen to that, im not really sure what im talking about

All I know is these

tiles seem to blend better together than the other tiles, even though I'm almost certian they're the same colors  :-\

Anyway good luck and happy pixeling :)
and don't put yourself down so much, your doing fine!

If you do go with top-down foliage, I think you would do well to add a thicker fringe of leaves, and a solid leafy green rather than black in the middle (like in the Star Ocean shot). My first guess when I saw them was pits with grass trailing into the edges, and my second was dark swamp water with a shallow fringe. There's just not quite enough in the way of visual clues to say that they're the tops of trees.
