Base Character shape

on: June 03, 2012, 02:10:21 am
I have this base image.

However, I need to make a base model for left/right. I seem to be having a lot of trouble with this. Anyone have any advice and a link to something to help me?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi hallowlore! First off, what type of project is it for? Im going to guess its a RPG game but let me know if I am wrong!

Second, i would start by taking the basic head and making a slim profile of the body as a beveled rectangle then work from that. Have it as wide as the feet currently are then make alterations for the form.

Thanks! It's for a simple RPG. The movement is like Pokemon so I'm looking for that type of profile.

I came up with this, but something seems wrong.

His chest looks flabby, so try flattening those pixels. Also his arm appears a little deformed.

I changed the main to be a little bit thinner.

and I altered it up a bit on the side. What do you think?

The main problem with the bottom one is that it has a bad case of the jaggies, mostly.  In addition to that, it doesn't seem to have much correct anatomy to it.  (yes, there is more than that wrong with it, but let's start with small steps to improve upon it)

Stupid quick reference:

Here's just a quick example of what a head on the side should look like, even if you're going for some sort of rounded chibi style (right now it really just looks like an oval)  As you can see, you don't define the chin, nose, etc., and it therefore doesn't look very human.  I would play around with the front area of the face more one you clean up the jaggies.  In addition, I suggest defining the base even better by coloring it, adding in eyes+nose+etc, so that it's easier to visualize what you're going for, and can therefore work on the outlines to make them better defined as well.

Just my USD0.02.  Would contribute my own edit, but I just barely had time to get my thoughts in a post before I've gotta head out for tonight.  I'll play around with it tomorrow. :)

Well actually, you don't need to define the shape of the head with nose and everything.
It's actually preferable if you don't, since it can be hard to read at low res.

(from google)

Also, the perspective is supposed to be from above the character and not from the side. (most common mistake that I see around here, could use a tutorial sticky!)

And you really should shade your sprite, even if it's just grayscale.
Those outlines don't really tell us anything other than the size and silhouette.
