WIP tileset (needs tons of c&c!)

on: April 08, 2012, 01:25:46 pm
Theres not much to say about this, apart from the fact that I am looking for C&C about my new tileset. I'd lovee for it to be a game, but cant ever find programmers!

I think every tile has 5 colours, apart from transitioning tiles, as they have 10(?)

Sorry for asking that but... that rocks are wall or floor? ???
I think they are floor but that transition from the grass to the rock and the colors of the dirt confuse me a lot.

Well, firstly there are may different ways to make grass, but maybe in that case you should add a bit of "randomize". With the dirt, i would do the same but less (it's your choice) but in my opinion the colors are a bit too separate.
Here an example:

If you don't like that randomize effect on the grass, I repeat there are more ways to make it.
Algo you can read that st0ven's post: [LINK]

Hope it helps.

Now I can only see it as a cliff ._. In some ways, however, that is good for me. I was never able to work out how to make cliff/wall tiles :D I will do something like hideon for the floor tile and see if my first tiles still work as cliff tiles :3

made a test edit:

I will make some sort of floor to wall transition, but i tried to keep the floor the same sort of style as the wall; all I did was edit out some detail and colour.
I got rid of the highlights on the grass to make it less "noisy"
I am not sure whether I like it? Thoughts?

As you can see, my weak point is perspective. Hahah

I would suggest you sketch the whole tile set first, or a scene, rather than working on individual tiles like this. You'll never make a 'best dirt', 'best grass' etc. You have to look at these things as parts of an overall whole. I wouldn't even worry about making them tile well, at least, not right away. Do the cliffs on four sides, all the transition tiles, etc, as roughly as you can and then work towards cleaning them up and making them look good once you can see where you need to focus your energy.

Very sound advice, Lackey.

Just because the end result must fit within a tile constrained to 16 x 16 pixels, doesn't mean that you have to create it inside such restrictions.
And furthermore, just because the results are tiles, doesn't necessarily mean you have to create each tile in order.

Additionally, your grass is coming off as a steel pattern.
Compare it to grass.
Contemplate the differences between the two.

Don't be afraid if your grass doesn't "tile" right away. First make it look like grass. We'll help you make it tile afterward.
