Random pixels

on: June 05, 2006, 12:27:28 am
I feel like doing pixels again atm and I plan on posting stuff in this thread from time to time. C&C welcome as usual.

Some pictures to start things off:

It's a couple of months old in fact, but I felt like 3 pics would be needed to justify a thread ;) I couldn't get the legs right so I just cut them off ... yea, I'm a lazy bastard.

This was a quick one (1.5h), I didn't feel like spending time on details. I just made it to visualize the idea I had in my mind. Not the greatest palette either ...

I made this one to practice sprites a little, I usually only do larger stuff.

1st sprite: shading on the wall instead of different shades of red per block would give it more detail.that is, if you want detail.
2nd: i like it.
3rd: grat shading, but shouldn't be the gun and the holster be on the same side of his body?
other than that, great works, dude.

Yea you're right about the wall, at the time I just wanted to keep the colourcount low, so I used the sprite's colours for the background as well.

Actually, he's got two holsters, but I agree, it isn't really visible or anything ;) I added a couple of pixels for the second holster and did a background while I was at it:

Needs some more tweaking though, the sprite blends in too much. Plus it uses a lot of colours ;)

As i see it, the reason why the sprite blends into the background is because it has a lower contrast than the bg. The darkest tones on the bg go down to like a 10% luminance, while the sprite's darkest ones to 40%. Maybe reverse that, or bump the contrast on the sprite (you could go almost all the way up to white on the highlights, since it's in broad daylight in good ole Texas).

On the first animation, shame on you for coming to such lows. It's a nice power strut, but i'd like some legs with that, sir.

The second pic is serious ownage. Palette's a bit low on contrast to be viewed at 1x, but the idea and execution is very very nice. Wallpaper worthy material :)

Good lord...
I cannot put into words how awesome that 2nd pic is, conceptually.

Oh, a crit: for the aforementioned awesomeness, It'd be cool if you lit the "Hips" up just a bit, like you did the arm(s).

Thanks for your comments, Turbo and Xion. Here's the final version for the cowboy scene:

I changed the cowboy's highlight to white and desaturated the background a little. Plus there's a horsey and the antagonist :)

Ayii!!! The bad guy's forward leg blends into the background way too much. I didn't even see it at first. It's a grey [leg] in front of a grey building. The building is detailed and the leg is as well. Ya know what happens under those circumstances, right? Also, the foot blends in with the ground as well. The legs look at odd angles, and, again with the forward leg, it's knee isn't too obvious. Everything else is vury purty, though.

I think it's brilliant. Nice details and a cool, gritty feeling overall. The only thing that bugs me is that some of the building details feel a bit flat (saloon railings," roof" on the grey building), but that's probably just due to the perspective.

Loving your new stuff so far..
I wish the sentry/robot one was completed more as it looks interesting..
I like the cowboy mockup the best.. I didn't notice the bad guy's forward leg at all, because the foot is the same color as the ground as well as him looking like he's standing straight. Nice choice of colours and the right amount of contrast.

What are you working on these days btw?

Second one deserves some more love. You should polish it up a bit more, the concept is wikkid but the execution is much less so.

I'd bump up the difference between the cowboy's shirt and pants, it's a bit too similar as of now and almost looks like pajamas. You could also ditch at least some of the dithering on the horse, it would probably look better without it. Maybe add more defined shadows under the cowboys.

Anyway, here's something new. It's mostly finished, maybe I should add some AA though

This is very nice. at 1x it doesn't seem to need any AA, so it depends if you force the resolution or not. I say go for it anyway.

This is rather cool... That last one's colors reminded me of C64 stuff, so I figured I'd throw it into paint and do a -> 50% -> 200% horizontal resizing to see how it'd look with wide pixels...

it's awesome, haha. nice wet/shiney look for the tentacles, it doesn't work as well on the head though. i wasn't sure about the blueish gray in there first, but it actually is just the right cold tint to hint some slippery cutaneous translucency

In my opinion on the bark, there should be another tone right before the darkest. And the contrast isn't consistent throughout the picture.
And I am finally seeing that you were the one worth eating.

it also looks kinda strange because your tree trunk gets wider as it goes up. i'm just gonna edit it a little bitty bit

changed some things, including contrast, where i brought down the darkest shade used on the trees and made the background trees even lighter by changing everything a shade,
the shape of your trunks, some outlines on the tree, the dirt path color,

and i also tried adding texture to the thing in the foreground just to see if it fills it in better, not sure sure about that part because i may be mistaken and it could be a dark hole sorta thing...whatever it is

the sky dither could be smoothed out more as well.

Looks great! Composition wise it's horrible heh (ie. left tree in between valley in bg, which in turn is behind the rock, which is in turn behind the mushroom, to say the least)
But I absolutely love the colours used, and the texturing you did. Ok, the crits which you can take or leave.

1) I think the trees should lose any outlines, as it just kills realism (as akaline kindly provided, but not 100%). Don't forget the top of the right tree.

2) alkaline's edit upping the darkest shade color in the trees is a good choice, makes it more consistent with the rest of the peice.

3) The grass area on the bottom right is interesting at the bottom (bush silhoette at the bottom) because there is some variation in the grass, and with the silhoette, but as you look upwards it's one big mass that looks similar. (no grass in the grass, dark spots, overgrown grass etc)

4) I don't think the edit of the silhouette works in alkaline's edit, or maybe even the original. The silhouette makes the image look more crowded than it is in the first place.

Edit: here's some more stuff I did over the last few months which is mostly unfinished and not that good really.

Meant as a follow-up to the pic in the first post:

Unfinished elements for a website layout:

No anatomy:

Failed attempt at a mockup for a remake of the crappy game "Vixen" (16c from a 12bit palette):

The underlying lineart was bad to start with, this has no depth or whatsoever and texture is way too random:

Cute, but I think the black could be used to add some detail the mouth, rather than just leaving it dark red. Also, you've got quite a few wasted colors, the pink and brown midtones are pretty indistinguishable. Maybe add some brighter highlights on the teeth to make them look wet? Some stringy saliva? His right (our left) shoulder looks weird, his fat head should probably be casting a shadow onto it. The ears don't match, as they're outlined, unlike everything else.

From the series "12 disasters you never heard about" (#8), or: when badly drawn saucers attack.

Please disregard the extreme colour count, actually this probably shouldn't even be done in pixels at all :) I'm too annoyed by it by now to fix all the places that still need work, I'll probably leave it like it is now.

fad avater looks cool. you prolly should have finished it. but then i prolly shoulda finished 1000 other pieces so i know what its like

second one is looking hawt. the only thing that really sticks out at me is the front time. i know its meant to be cartoony but its too skewed imo. his hands also don't really look like hands and the shading on the lower front face part doesn't really make sense to me...

Thanks for your comment. I knew somebody was gonna say something about the hands, but they're really supposed to be like that (no, really, that's not a lame excuse! :D). About the skewed front, I think it wouldn't look dynamic enough if it was straight. I did change the shading on the face however, I hope it's better now. This is most likely the final version, 16 colours used.
